Train Stabbing - Suspect Charged
Discussion
I'm sure we've all seen those appalling videos of some scumbag stabbing someone on a train this week.
They've just charged someone a 19 year old called Rakeem Thomas.
It might be a small world but I'm assuming this is the same person.
Man jailed one day after being caught with knife at London railway station
That clearly worked out well then.
This weeks victim appears fortunate to be alive.
What on earth are we doing handing out six month sentences and letting people out in three months for walking around with something like that on them.

We caught him with a knife and gave a sentence of 6 months?? What is wrong with our legal system. Looks like some people are just bad and need to be locked up for a very long time.
There should be a mandatory sentence of at least 5 years if you are caught with a knife on your possession that cannot easily be explained (for example carrying it for the trade). Also increase the number of metal detectors, and the newer AI based knife detectors once they are available and proven to be working. Especially in public places such as railway stations.
I don't buy the reasoning that people come from improvised backgrounds and that is the reason they go out to commit these crimes.

There are already sentencing guidelines which say up to four years for carrying a knife. I agree with you though. There should be a mandatory sentence of at least 5 years if you are caught with a knife on your possession that cannot easily be explained (for example carrying it for the trade). Too many apologists and useful idiots, happy to blame society as a whole (even the victims), rather than the perpetrators (something something racism). No room in prisons, Police afraid of going after these 'types' (more racism) lest they be hung out to dry by their brainwashed, virtue-signalling superiors, and lefty lawyers committed to preventing the government actually doing what most people want which is to send these people from whence they came. Not sure if this guy is a recent arrival, or home grown. Don't really care anymore. The problem is only going to get worse, until the people themselves step up. The absolutely blatant and unashamed daylight attack with so many witnesses shows just how little they fear the Police or the justice system.

Seems that he got a sentence in line with the guidelines, served part of it (let out early as per government policy), offended again and was caught.Looks like law enforcement did their job properly, without worrying about being accused of racism, but the failing is in the punishment and rehabilitation given to offenders.

I found this from a month ago, which shows the difficult task police have with stop and search
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-68219...
But then we also have this, where facial recognition technology helped catch potential offenders
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/met-police-f...
Surely there can be a smarter way? I have been a proponent of truly random stop and searches, but maybe there is a case of AI based, more intelligent way to stop people, so you don't stop the same people all the time, and it's very clear the procedures used for stop and search. These cameras should be set up everywhere.
I say all this as party of a minority that would probably be at the wrong end of stop and searches (as I was when I was younger).

Of course it should be profile based, otherwise it is just a waste of resources. Why randomly search middle-class school run mums? or the retired couple feeding the ducks? or the suited and booted chap on his way home from work? Black or white, these types can be spotted a mile away, the mannerisms, the clothes, the attitude. We all know it, and most of us will give them a wide berth if we are unlucky enough to be in the vicinity. You don't need AI, you need common sense.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-68219...

if the choice was between
1. AI / facial recognition based stop and search with occasional random searches (which worked recently)
2. Truly random stop and search (random across everyone, but not palatable)
3. Targeted stop and search (which could lead to police officers being prosecuted for targeting the same people)
Which do you think would (a) be the most likely to get the most support (b) have the least amount of police prosecutions / court cases
I would suspect it's (1)

If 3 lead to a faster reduction in crime, it would be the best option. Popularity should not come into it. Let the Police do their job. I think most (non-criminal) people would be very supportive of something which works, rather than appeasing the bleeding hearts. Change the law so that anyone with previous convictions for violent or anti-social behaviour is unable to prosecute the Police. That would reduce the number of Police prosecution cases, and would be rather popular too. Win-win.1. I think perhaps that Ms Butler is a bit confused about what the role of a Guard is. It's certainly not to risk their own lives and tackle knife wielding maniacs. Maybe it's the word Guard that confused her. Does she think they wear armour and ride up and down the train on a small horse? https://x.com/dawnbutlerbrent/status/1773279814440...
Either way, Mr Lynch might have a few things to say about that!
Hopefully Dawn won't get too senior a job in the new Government

You really did drink in all the propaganda in didn't you. It's not the Governments fault over the last 14 years, austerity and cost cutting decimated the police service, social services and the criminal justice system. It's the immigrants fault.
It''s not the Government's fault that they've been funnelling £100's of billions of taxpayer money into the hands of the very wealthy over the last 14 years, causing inflation and increasing poverty, it's the immigrants.
You're right. The people need to step up.
We need principled, moral and competent people to enter politics. We need to vote these principled, moral and competent people into Parliament.
We need a competent Government that is dedicated to working for all the people.
Instead of this st show that encourages divisions in the people, where ever it finds them, so it can carry on decimating public services while enriching the very wealthy even more.
Remember a few years ago going to a football match and as I stood in the queue stuck my hand in my pocket of my coat and found a knife, I had been doing DIY a few days before on the car, must have put the knife into my pocket instead of the toolbox.
Which reminds me that I still have some scissors in the car from when I took some flowers to the cemetery
