Two teenagers have died after the e-bike they were passengers on crashed with four cars in Moray.

The boys, aged 16 and 17, were pronounced dead at the scene following the crash on the A941 Elgin to Lossiemouth road on Monday evening.

Another boy, aged 14, the rider of the bike, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of one of the cars, a 54-year-old man, was also seriously injured.
My bolding. Hope the injured driver recovers well.

Help me out here...

Is it because the boy is 14 you don't wish him well in recovering from his serious injuries, or because he was on a bike?

I'm struggling to see why you single out the driver for your well wishes.

I'm confused - were there three of them on the illegal bike?

You’re not confused. They were three-up on a Surron.

What I don't get is, those Sur-Rons are 3 or 4 grand. Who the hell is buying them for these kids? A 14 year old lad isn't going to have that sort of cash hanging about.

I’d guess it because some assumptions are being made about the teenagers and how the were riding

What id say living near Portsmouth the number of children (and adults) riding electric motorbikes and modded e scooter going faster than the 30mph traffic a death/ serious injury has been coming.

If you couple it with the trend of wearing black trackies with a balaclava it’s easy to see how driver might not see them.

Yes, I thought similar, I dont want to hear about a young lad losing his life or others being injured.

But, can also see how this is happening, and will happen more.

The BBC said "e-bike" but the likelihood is, that it isnt what comes under the definition of e-bike, i.e. a bicycle with an electric motor to assist the rider up to 15.5 mph whereupon it cuts out, provinging a maximum assistance of 250 Watts. Its more likely it was an electric motorcycle as mentioned of the "Sur-Ron" variety which is a 50 plus kilo device that will do 60 plus miles per hour.

Kids are buying these things, they are not toys but are fast, silent, efficient and a great way to get around but they require training, helmets, registration plates and insurance but they have none of that. What they have is a balaclava and a lot of contempt for the Police and traffic regulations.

I was on my MAMIL powered bike the other day, I was going past a car turning right so the road was blocked, so the kid on one of these went up the inside of me, on the pavement rather than wait, they cruise round without a care in the world thinking its all great fun, but 60 plus mph with no helmet and no experience is a recipe for disaster.

Its all over anti social media, going along doing wheelies for miles, weaving in and out, getting chased by Police cars who cant do much as they are so fast and manoeuvrable.

oh thank you - I'm the wrong demographic obviously, but never heard of one of those.

So it's like a electirc mountain bike for off road only - no tax, insurance etc

filled under 'play silly games, win silly prizes' then.

shame for the families involved

They’re lightweight electric motorcross bikes.

Correct.

But, sure as the sun rises in the morning, legislation will come that lumps in proper, legal e-bikes with number plates etc because of these balaclava clad idiots. Absolutely guarantee it. Incidents like this are just nails in the coffin.

I opened the thread thinking it was a reply to the one where they died after being "chased" by a police van but no it's a different couple of promising footballers that have ended up brown bread. Oh dear what a shame nevermind.

They are an electric motor bike, not mountain bike. The manufacturer also makes road legal versions which are slower and have all the required lights etc to be a legitimate road going motorbike.

Scrotes prefer the illegal versions, and a balaclava as a helmet.

There were a few of these cases last summer and my suspicion was that the teens were being used to deliver drugs. The bikes must be fairly quiet, fast and light which makes them ideal for avoiding attention or getting away.

They seem to think they are unfairly persecuted and doing nothing wrong, because its just a bike innit, just kids having fun and everyone is a spoilsport.

The top Sur-rons are 30 bhp and weigh 50/60 kilos, that isnt a bicycle, the E bike rules are designed to provide assistance, mainly for ascending hills, you can go faster than 15.5 mph but you need to do that using your own energy.

So by some process of e-bikes being legal its morphed into teenagers riding round on these things and treating it as they would riding a bicycle, but it has no pedals, a twist throttle and more power than any cyclist can produce, with some comparable to a 125 Moto Cross bike at 30 bhp, they are pretty much silent where a crosser announces its presence to everyone in a mile radius or more. But moto cross bikes and quads are getting in on the action, the riders having realised the Police are limited in what they can do.

So you have teenage lads on rough estates with a healthy disrespect for the Police charging round on silent motorcycles at speed with no safety gear except a little handbag and some grey trackies, and it is occasionally going wrong, we only tend to hear when they die but bet there are a lot of Kyles and Jaydens in casualty with mashed up legs and other speed splat type injuries, plus whoever they plough into.

It needs stopping, not the bikes, the illegal and irresponsible use, they look great fun and a legal one a very efficient and quick way to get around if used properly, never seen a legal one I dont think, lots of illegal ones.

So I have a ecycle - that can do 28 MPH - but I have to pedal it (not that hard) - and fck me it feels fast on the road being a tiny little bike

that's coming from a 30 year motorcyclist - it feels much more dangerous than any of my bikes - and I always wear a motorcross lid when I'm on it
