Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says the design of the St George's Cross on the English football team kit should not be "messed with".
Earlier, Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer had also joined the chorus of prominent voices taking issue with design.
The new shirt design features the cross of St George in navy, light blue and purple on the back of the collar.
BBC News understands there are no plans to change or recall the shirt.

Team GB Olympic kit with blue-tone Union Jack? Fine.
'Lo Vis' monochrome Union Jack with Thin Blue Line to represent the police? Fine.
Conservative Party logo with blue-tone Union Jack in the shape of a tree? Fine.
St. George's Cross flags with 'ENGLAND' across the middle? Fine.
Small detail on a football shirt using a different colour for a team that is usually represented by a totally different symbol? Apparently an affront to our national identity!!!!

What a complete non-story that is. Who cares what's on the back of the collar anyway!
The away kit is quite nice this time around although my favourite of the recent releases is the Tintin inspired Belgium away strip.. KDB will basically be Tintin!

Any brand guardians out there?
Nike’s book is about 10” x 12” and 800 pages of how to or not how to use their logo and typeface etc.
It’s either the flag or it’s not the flag.
If it supposedly is the flag, it is, and should look like it.
If it’s not, it’s just a weird, st, undefined, unrecognisable cross shape.
Nike of all people should know about respecting brand, and respecting country’s flags who similarly protecting their brands… so why do Nike feel they can just rebrand someone else’s stuff?
Imagine the furore if someone just said “oh we just thought we’d redesign the swoosh a bit and make it more playful, along with a font change to comic sans to make it more fun” and then released it on official clothing or something

Do you think the same about the blue-tone Union Jack worn by Team GB? Or the Conservative Party? It’s either the flag or it’s not the flag.

The controversial cross shape isn't meant to be 'The England Flag' - it is a small detail in the design of the shirt, intended as a nod to the England flag. The Cross of St. George isn't even the symbol of the English football team. The Three Lions on the background of roses is that symbol, being the coat of arms of the FA and derived from the royal coat of arms for England. That logo is unchanged on the Home kit, and features is a suitably colour-swapped gold/purple form on the Away kit.
The cross on the back of the collar is a George Cross-evoking shape in the colour palette of the kit - three shades of red, one of purple and two of blue. It is not meant to be 'the flag', merely to evoke it.

Tenuous. I think your point highlights the problem, what is it (the symbol) trying to be? It's almost as if someone wanted to use the rainbow colours, decided not to at the last minute and an artist quickly did a find and replace on a bunch of random colours.
TBH at least if it had the rainbow colour palette we would all know what it is, as it stands its art and therefore can be critiqued based on its merits, as they are.
My critique on it is that its not very pretty.
