Earlier in the week McDonald's had a global outage due to a third party provider and "was not directly caused by a cybersecurity event - rather, it was caused by a third-party provider during a configuration change,"

Today it seems that both Tesco and Sainsbury's have major technical issues. Sainsbury's claiming it's due to rolling out an overnight software update on a Friday night (seems like a terrible time to do this!)

Might just be a coincidence but seems to be happening quite a bit this week!

Bloody chaos earlier in my local Sainsbury's. Spanish woman in the checkout in front of me couldn't use her credit card, I'm guessing foreign cards bamboozled the system (???)
I had to use a Visa card as my Amex got rejected.

Inconvenient for some, but never to be forgotten when it comes to those in power wanting to get rid of cash.

That explains why when I went to my local Sainsbury's earlier to get some diesel the forecourt was queued out and it was chaos so didn't bother. In fact it so bad I thought I had missed a "fuel shortage" story in the media.

Some years ago we were in Sainsbury's, trolley filled as was our daughter's too. Saturday, packed to the hilt. Announcement over tannoy, 'Sorry everyone our systems are down. Please bear with us while we try to sort it.

Can you imagine it? Yep, pandemonium was setting in. Kids yelling etc. We went round the store a bit while waiting, and hearing customers moaning.

Some minutes later another announcement. 'Once again we apologise we are trying hard to get the system back online. For those of you who have cash please come forward. Ha ha ha. Wasn't too many of us. We headed straight to the nearest till.
Trolleys were abandoned as majority left their goods all piled up and headed for the exit (presumably to go elsewhere to shop).

Cash?
I ALWAYS have cash on me, even more so today.

Be careful what you wish for. Well, most don't wish, they never ever can see a downside until it's too late. LOL

Sounds like payment card provider issue, smells a bit like a cyber security issue.

Probably rather claim human incompetence than cyber fragility.

You chose not to have cash on you. Sounds like your own fault.

The large one I drove to this morning was cash only.

My local one was working for Visa Debit a couple of hours ago.

How do we get "cash" if the cash machines go down? Are we supposed to have a couple of grand in cash at home "just in case"?

I'll be fine smile

It's a large Sainsburys that I visit every day on my way home from work.

Hopefully it will be chaos & pandemonium when I am there in an hour biggrin

A couple of hundred isn't a bad idea.

Ditto a torch with a charged battery.

My local one was working. Card and contactless payments at the till.

SmartShop was down so obviously didn't get the 'discounts'. The in-store announcement system was glitching out and kept repeating for about 10 minutes that there was a fire alarm test.

My tinfoil hat tells me it's too much of a coincidence.

I wouldn't be surprised if in a week or so they blame it on russian hackers.
