Yeah, I could sail solo and ride motorcycles at about 8, loads of kids could. I drove my Dad's car in carparks with him in the passenger seat. Neither cars nor bikes were automatic.BMW X5 so probably an auto and maybe push button start?

I see no difficulty in driving a car at all for a lad over 8. (Assuming he can reach the pedals.)
Navigating a motorway, and a trailer and knowing where to go might be more of a challenge but I suspect he was following another 'loveable rogue'.
