A cross-continent is-it-news-or-shouldn't-it-be thing has bobbed up on Australian media about Female Socceroo captain and Chelsea player Sam Kerr, who had a ruckus with a taxi driver Twickenham in January 2023. A police officer who was called to the scene was the unwitting recipient of racially aggravated harassment by way of (allegedly) being called a stupid white bd. The recounting of events by Kerr differs and she says she addressed the police officer as a stupid white cop, which I suppose makes it alright.

Unfortunately Kerr didn't advise some of her stakeholders of her predicament..... A year later (i.e. now) it has gone to court and subsequently been picked up by the media and Football Australia and assorted other people have found out about it all second-hand. It started to break here around Tuesday and the Australian soccer industry and other stakeholders have busily "closed ranks" around Kerr as she goes through this tough period... Supporters have pretty much trotted out the "boys will be boys" defence and male supporters saying that they've been called much worse so it's okay.

It is certainly interesting to watch how it is being covered and how she is being treated.

It has gone from shock at the allegations to “that’s fine, you can’t be racist to white people” now the alleged comment has been published.

I suspect there is more to it - she must have said some other things as well and the alleged comment was the thing that tipped the copper over the edge.

ETA she is a Matilda, not a Socceroo.

"Former Socceroo and prominent anti-racism advocate Craig Foster has apologised to Matildas star Sam Kerr for condemning her alleged remark to a UK police officer as racist."

article said:
“Like many, I mistakenly thought that comments that references any colour and were discriminatory, demeaning or hostile were a form of racism. I apologise to Sam for that mistake,” Foster wrote in a statement posted on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday.

Citing the Diversity Council of Australia’s definition of racism which references the perpetrator being in a position of “race-based societal power”, Foster said racism cannot be committed against a white person as they are not a member of a marginalised group.

“Does that equate to double standards when the same terms of phrases are used against marginalised groups, is the question,” Foster wrote.
Interesting statement from Foster quoting the Diversity Council of Australia.

The DCA isn’t a Government body so I doubt their view has any real meaning.

What matters is what English Law says.

Given this allegedly happened in Twickenham and she's been charged under UK law I'd say the UK definition is more relevant.
