Is this just more sabre rattling or is the threat getting more serious? I'm sure he has said this before.

More sabre rattling BS IMO.
Given the apparent rubbish state of their military, what's the chances of their nukes working anyway? It would be totally pointless due to MAD, but then again, Putin does seem a little unhinged, so who knows?

It'll probably be like our trident test. The missile, along with it's nuclear warhead, failing to launch and falling over on it's side. I be that would be a funny "oh st" moment laugh

Yawn. Literally all he has left in the locker and they know the Western press and simpletons will get themselves worked up.

The truth-seeking contrarians, on the other hand, will lap it up.

The lad is a total fanny, he should come to the UN thingy instead of Lavrov and say these things in person rather than hiding behind his massive table.

It'd be kinda funny (in a Dr Strangelove sort of way) if the whole thing escalated to the point where both sides hit all the red buttons at their disposal, and absolutely none of them worked.

The end of the world has been postponed to next Tuesday due to "technical difficulties" hehe

I wish they'd hurry up. I want to retire but can't afford to hehe

A good nuclear blast might make our roads nice and smooth again. It wouldn't make them any worse.

Yep, weak strongman is lashing out with idle threats because he's got nothing left.

This isn't the first time he's played the nuclear card since ethe Ukraine invasion.

All us normal people just want to live a normal life, bring our kids up, have a few holidays, go out for a beer, a curry on a Friday night.

These idiots supposedly in charge of our countries actually threaten that?

I'd love to see a few of these so called leaders meet in a pub and have a scrap, I'd have a bit more respect for them then.

I think that's the water utility companies that are doing that.

If you go down to the beach today, it won't be a big surprise, you'll be swimming in raw sewerage

When you say "in charge of our countries" plural. Heads of state who threaten nuclear war are pretty rare. Putin & Kim have done regularly over many years, I can't think of anyone else off hand and nobody I'd describe as 'ours'.

No, it's just a sabre-shaped object, made from potato and tinfoil. HTH

It's not even sabre rattling.

But that's not the point.

If you are serious about using such weapons, the last thing you do is say - we're going to use them, here is the issue though.

If he feels pushed into losing power, it just might happen.

It's naive to believe that of their thousands of nukes, none would work.

I've no idea how unhinged he is but there comes a point when MAD isn't enough for something not to happen.

I have wondered if, pushed into a corner. he might launch one missile at a medium sized western town/city. His greatest weapon is the western electorate, none of whom might be happy at the prospect of being 'next'.

Russia will definitely have been told, in no uncertain terms, that's not an option they have. If just 1 missle landed on a NATO country, I am pretty sure there would be a whole lot more making the return trip.

I'd agree. If he knows he's imminently going the way of Gadaffi or Ceaucescu he might choose to end the world out of sheer spite.

Hitler would certainly have done so in his last hours and he had people around him at the end who were also about to die and would have followed his orders. Maybe Putin's the same.

Nothing we can do about it though, just have to hope for the best.

I would hope that if he did order a nuclear strike then the response from his own side would be to instigate a coup and seek a peace agreement.

However I have no idea just who holds the real power over the Russian army and to whom they are allied. They’d also need enough sway to imprison / execute the entire pro Putin camp. Would be a messy few weeks for sure.
