Sad. He's been part of radio since I can remember.

(Serious Jockin' got a bit tedious though!)

I had gone off him a lot in recent years but that is truly sad and shocking news. He clearly loved what he did and many listeners did too.

I know I've only just began this thread, but this is such a shocker. My first memories of listening to Steve Wright, was on his Radio 1 afternoon show in around 1978/79. The phone in characters like Sid the manager, Mr Angry from Purley were just hilarious...

He was still on Radio 210 in 78/79. Joined R1 in 1980

That show was prerecorded apparently.

Ah okay.., my memory isn't what it was! I stand corrected. On that basis, I must have started listening to him in 1980 as I certainly wasn't a listener of R2 back then..!

smile Radio 210, not Radio 2.

A commercial radio station based, at the time, next to Ford's Farm near Reading.

Sadly it isn't. For all the guy's talent he lived terribly and had a chronic weight problem. Most people weren't aware of it because even as recently as last week when the BBC announced new programming to try and attract back older audiences they featured (at Wright's behest) 10 year-old publicity pictures of him.

Here's how he really looked recently...

Blimey that is a shock, hadn't listened to him for years but enjoyed his earlier shows.
