George Freeman has quit his £118,300 job as Science Minister as he cannot afford his mortgage. It has risen from £800 to £2000.

This story throws up a few things:
1. that even those at the top of the food chain are feeling the squeeze of the middle classes
2. that he didn't chose to instead sell the property and remain in post - because there is no market perhaps?
3. what are his peers doing as a side hussle to pay their mortgages when he has been compelled to quit?

I feel for George - he's been a victim of the Oppressive Tax Regime we are living under.

Takes home over 6k a month but can't afford 2k on a mortgage ? hmmm.

I shouldn't think he'll get much sympathy at around 4 times the average salary.

His take home should be about £6500/month, I wonder what proportion of people pay a third of more of thier income in to thier mortgage, I suspect a huge amount. Although I agree that a £1200/month increase on the mortgage is hard to swallow, I'm glad I'm on a 10 years fixed!

Read he got something like £8000 just for stepping down from a ministerial position, plus all the expenses he'll be claiming, don't they get money just for turning up or is that only the Lords?

I read that as he "can't afford" to miss out on the juicy consultancy fees/backhanders he could get elsewhere. Especially since his ministerial and perhaps his parliamentary career have a fairly finite future. I dare say he will pop up on some future honours list for his dedicated public service as a minister and his valuable contributions to life sciences.

Read somewhere that he had also gone through a divorce recently so perhaps that plays a bit in the cash flow…

Maybe he needs to stop eating out and buying coffee. Cut his cloth etc. That’s what his type like preaching.

I couldn’t have less sympathy if I tried. The bloke even has a subsidised canteen ffs.
