A nice round £200p/h.

What does community service even involve?

The only people I’ve seen doing it were painting in a Hospital outbuilding. Although they weren’t arsed and did a crap job.

That was like 20 years ago and they were painting the staircases really bright horrible colours

Doubt they'll have a frial looking 65 year old with medical issues doing anything like that.

Administering community service must be a nightmare.

200 hours of community service is unduly lenient.

I'm not certain sending her to prison must be the only sentence, but 200 hours of community service is her paying back the money at £200 an hour.

Nah. She can pay back society what she stole from them at the National Living Wage. Lets account for inflation, and say 3000 hours.

Hardly the most sophisticated fraud was it. She was fully employed in a customer-facing role, paying tax and ni and yet HMRC didn't inform the DWP, so much for information sharing between govt departments. This should have been flagged up within weeks.

Also, this came to light in 2018, so it's taken nearly 6 years to come to court. DWP efficiency at its best.

Some community service is actually done on line. I haven't figured out what they would actually do.
In london a lot is actually not completed the younger ones site fear of gang violence so the requirement gets dropped.
In other cases if you dont turn up a few times you will get sent bavk to court and given more community service.
Or in a lot of cases they just cancel the order.
In short its often a waste of time.
In this case dhe has pretty much got away with it totally

I'm no bleeding heart lefty but £40,000 over 7 years is hardly master criminal stuff is it? When I saw the title I was thinking super yachts and private jets full of cocaine. Or the absolute fiasco of covid and the leeches who filled their pockets off the back of that. Or the illegal immigration racket where criminal gangs traffic dim-witted peasants while bought and paid for authorities and politicians help and encourage them. Some old woman claiming income support doesn't even register.

I bet they would have let HMRC know if Child Benefit was being incorrectly claimed.

£100 pw for seven years. Not to be encouraged, but not exactly going to bankrupt the nation?

See also Government COVID supply procurement, Post office software implementation, Scottish ferry renewals for more ambitious misuse of government funds.

It might if enough people do it. The point with benefit fraud is that we don't know how much there is.

Is it just me or is it odd that there's no mention of recovering the money from her pension or something - either to say it's not possible or that's what's happening? I'd be surprised if it's not being recovered even if it's at a tenner a week or something.

No but we know the cost of benefits and despite the dog whistling from the right to rile up the marginally less poor, we know most are not living a high luxurious life on benefits.

You chose to ignore my second paragraph where financial mismanagement actually does have an impact on the country’s finances and that is before I get to the criminal ineptitude of Truss which stole money from so many people in this country due to her inability to operate in conjunction with the financial markets.

But let’s all shout about some still poor person getting a hundred quid a week extra. As I say, not to be encouraged, but hardly a crime worthy of vilification.

Well we have seen our Govt give away billions during Covid. This is small potatoes.

No and it has been dealt with, but not worth frothing about.

The right are expert at galvanising the working class and lower middle class to despise the poor; mainly to look at them with disdain or with the fear of becoming them.

I will leave you to it now, you are clearly having fun.

That's called "Restorative Justice". They are merely fishing out of the canal the shopping trolleys they put there in the first place.
