Annie Nightingale: Legendary Radio 1 DJ dies at 83 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-6795...

That’s a shame; and has made me sad to see.

Read her autobiography some years ago and would recommend it. Quite a character and very entertaining.

Big loss to new music.

I used to love listening to the request show on a Sunday night after the Top 40 as a teenager in the 80s. Heard lots of great "new" indie music back then

An important part of my youth, great DJ. RIP.

First remember her from the Old Grey Whistle Test in the late '70s when I was a kid. Always thought she was pretty cool.

Are you sure? That would have been 1956. Radio 1 didn't exist before 1967. I think she started on R1 in 1970, when she was 30.

2011 doc. on BBC4 23:00 Bird on the Wireless (great name).

Some of my teenage years were spent under the blanket with her & Alan Black IIRC. And a trannie of course (no, not that kind).
Then driving home from girlfriend on a Sunday afternoon.

When Nomme was 16, not when AN was 16.

I'm good at sums and I also know exactly how old I am. Sadly quite old.

1970 was also the year I got my motorcycle licence and bought a 3 wheeler. Berkeley T60.

Anyway Ioved her voice too. I do wonder if some if the current broadcasters will have such longevity.

I suspect unlikely… think back; her compatriots included the likes of Bob Harris, John Peel… etc

Would love to think there are successors but I can’t think of any

Yes John went way too soon as well.

I think good old whispering Bob is still about. Was a big fan of the OGWT

Very sad news. I remember her from The Old Grey Whistle Test days. I particularly remember the show with The Damned and they started smashing up their instruments and she casually remarked that the studio held the ghosts of The Who. RIP Annie.

I remember her interviewing Paul Simon and saying something like "the songs you wrote with Art Garfunkel". Simon was NOT pleased! "I wrote those songs myself", he whined.

Annie, with a bit of help from John Peel, got me through my O levels. Thanks Annie!

Apart from her smoky voice, the thing I liked about her was that she seemed to be a proper music lover who wanted to share the music she loved with other people.

Big contrast to the awful celeb R1 DJs of the time, who were only in it for their own egos.

A reason to keep taping. Annie Nightingale taught me about music.

I did exactly the same.
I was shocked that she was 83. In my head she was early 60’s and would be for ever.
Sad loss and there no longer any about like Annie and her compatriots.
