An advert for Calvin Klein has been banned after complaints the images used were "overly sexualised".

The poster featured singer FKA twigs wearing a denim shirt that was drawn halfway around her body, showing the side of her buttocks and half of one breast.

Above her, the text read: "Calvins or nothing".

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found the ad was likely to cause serious offence by objectifying women.

The regulator ruled the "image's composition placed viewers' focus on the model's body rather than on the clothing being advertised".

It also noted by focusing on FKA twigs' "physical features", it had "presented her as a stereotypical sexual object".

"We therefore concluded the ad was irresponsible and likely to cause serious offence," it said.

Two people had complained that the images were "overly sexualised", offensive and irresponsible because they objectified women and were inappropriately displayed.

Is ‘t the entire raisin d’etre for Calvin’s to sexualise the wearer (male or female)?

I have a picture in my minds eye of the 2 that complained… I suspect they’re the sort that goes out seeking outrage and finding it on a regular basis…

Apparently the ban is voluntary. Was a hilarious Lingscars thread where they tried to ban her from advertising a Delorean and she gave then some stick for it.

Haven't Calvin Klein's ads always included half naked men and women?

'They' don't ban on the number of complaints but merely on whether the advert contravenes the guidelines. Sometimes, whisper it, they ban ads without there being any complaints.

Society often alternates between puritanical and "free" times. The female form is seen as something "impure" during the former and needing to be hidden away.

Nothing really changes, only the justifications for things.

And the model is wearing the product (well sort of)

So it's a valid comparison to me.

Why don't the advertising standards agency just cut to the chase and mandate

- clothes can only be advertised on mannequins, with all the buttons done up

- cars can only be advertised by showing technical drawings and specifications

- food be advertised by listing ingredients and health stats

It seems the asa are massively naive about how the marketing and advertising industry, and indeed a lot of industries, actually work with respect to sex and image.

The asa should stick to adverts being clearly false, or break existing legal or decency standards.

And describing a woman as a "stereotypical sexual object?". I'm not even going near that one.

Meanwhile they're getting the kind of advertising you can't even pay for... Even middle aged fat blokes on a car forum are mentioning them by name.

Never ceases to amaze me how worked up some people get over an obvious marketing trick.

Yes, the complainants were probably from CK's marketing department.

And describing FKA Twigs as 'a stereotypical sexual object' sounds a bit insulting to me, she must have been happy with her portrayal. This is not the exploitation of an unknown 16 year old.

This is something that has occurred to me recently, with regard to everyone being offended.

We are in a regressive period of history, where free speech and freedom of expression is being stifled in the name of progress. The difference between now and fifty years ago is that the minority perpetuating it have access to the Internet to amplify their tiny and otherwise irrelevant voices.

User name checks out, but I suspect you've nailed it.

Can't see most people getting worked up over something like this.
