Gobsmacked, really?

I dare say many more have travelled on Virgin Air, who have left the flight with less, or more, baggage than they anticipated?

Soz, if that's a surprise....

When I was a lad a couple of friends worked for him (they worked for him directly) and from the stories they told, he always came across as a very pleasant and thoughtful person - so a bit of a shock tbh if what sky news is reporting is true.

Allegedly.

Someone saying something and another person writing it down and putting it in a paper doesn't automatically mean it's a true fact.

This modern trend of trial by media is a curse.

Disagree. The idea that it's a recent phenomenon is fanciful. Perhaps you read it on social media. Certain bits of the news media have been at it from the time of Gutenberg. If anything, it's significantly reduced nowadays. Private Eye had to tread carefully when it came to exposing the Post Officer corruption, this despite knowing full well that there were injustices. SLAPS are now common, cutting back on the ability of the media to print the truth. Just the threat of an action is enough to stop publication. It saved Maxwell from exposure, and the unscientific hippy medical cures aren't exposed because the interested parties can break careers. So perhaps not a curse.

As I noted on the g.Maxwell thread it isn’t even true. The evidence was admitted to be false in 2019 by the person who alleged (Sarah Ransome)

The dribs and drabs coming out now may not be material to the case but can cause harm.

The mistake people make is thing that very rich people aren't greedy.

A free island booze up (with or without extras) will be chomped upon quicker than a dog on mince!

I suspect Epstein's power came from understanding that even famous and rich people are still really, really greedy.

When I was younger I knew a few stewardesses that worked for the airline. I wouldnt be surprised to see him reported as not being faithful to his partner.

Scurrilous press has existed since the press was invented, the difference now is that information and rumour is distributed around the globe in an instant rather than at a fairly local level.

Social Media is not the press (your Gutenberg and Private eye examples are most definitely the press) and its the way most people consume their "news", it is however a media. Therefore I stand by my proclamation that trial by media (to this extent with its rapid unchecked spread) is a modern curse.

Quite: Twitter mobs and the feeding frenzy that is social media is utterly unlike previous iterations. Though to be honest the simplest way of not falling foul of that nonsense is not to be on it in the first place. It’s a walled garden of sociopaths.

One might make the argument that most, if not all, *very rich* people are exceedingly greedy.

When you live your life taking far more than you could ever need, is there a better word to describe the 0.1% of the population that controls ~50% of the worlds wealth?

Of course, not all *famous* people are greedy. Though they can be.

For clarity, he was on Epstein's island, but - he was there for the snorkeling, NOT for the diddling.

I'd be careful with comments like that around here; most seem to believe the 0.1% truly deserve it all, and the rest of us are jealous and should suck it up.

Also, something about trickle-down economics.

I thought there were "rumours" of escapades at his private island and "entertaining" the guests before in any event?

But then we have Bill Gates and Tom Hanks on the lists do we not? A few others that shock no-one too of course.... Some sweating more than others claim to....
