It looks as though they were part of an organised off road group on a well used trail.

It's very sad and regrettable that 3 men have lost their lives and it must have been traumatic for any spectators but watching people needlessly kill their cars on the Rufford Ford thread makes me wonder why people feel the need to drive through water more than ankle deep, let alone through a deep fast running stream.

It's a challenge.

Why climb a mountain, jump over a stck to see how high you can get?

The men tragically died in the River Esk - not sure why the thread title describes this river as a stream?

I've not read much about this, and don't intend to speculate, but hopefully some better awareness will come from this accident.

My sat nav once took me some crazy route that included a ford crossing. fk that was my immediate reaction and I just turned around and went back.

It's winter with record rainfall so rivers will be in spate, why drive through a ford voluntarily?

Because you might die? The river they tried to ford was in full flow and 5ft deep after recent storms. Complete idiots who sadly paid the ultimate price.

Recently a 4x4 got itself stuck whilst fording a river in flood on private land on the moors near me. Fortunately the occupants survived but had to abandon ship. Police located abandoned 4x4 and towed it, prosecutions followed. Karma.

Probably in bad taste but what part of "Storms and gales" did these morons not understand? Waste of emergency services time when we need it most.

I'm speculating here but maybe the other 4x4s made it across so they followed suit. The others probably survived by the skin of their teeth and it was too much of a risk already.

The higher the risk then the higher the exhilaration. New year's day they could've been sat around drinking and laughing how they managed it and nearly died trying. As it was, it was just a step too far.
