Lazy thread. Any details? What lyrics have been changed? And where, just radio edits, or across all versions on Spotify etc?

..'cheap lousy faggot' has been changed to something like 'you're drunk and you're haggard'.

...I'd not even realised faggot is a derogatory term, always thought it was a slightly dodgy looking meat product wrapped in some odd looking skin eaten by folk up north.

A discuss ion on this vital issue is long overdue, good on TB for offering up a release valve for all that pent up anti-wokism. I believe we’re having gammon with our turkey, I’ll raise a glass. Merry Xmas all.

I was speaking to an old chap about censorship yesterday. He was saying it is sad that some comedy from the past few decades is no longer aired lest it offends someone.

I agree with him, both in the context of comedy and FoNY.

Would I call anyone a "cheap lousy faggot"? No. Not today and never would have. Do I believe that anyone, anywhere, would be horribly offended by that line in a song released thirty-five years ago? Not in their own right, no. I think it is the vicariously offended who have a problem with it.

Thats the question. Songs have been altered lots of times for pre watershed playing etc....depends if this is a complete ban across all platforms

Removing faggot (which means a bundle of sticks but obviously has slang meaning) is no different than removing other sensitive words. No big deal removing it from some radio etc, but a wholesale ban is a different conversation.

Yet "Oliver's Army" by Elvis Costello has a far, FAR more offensive term in it, and I can't remember ever hearing any uproar about that, nor have I ever heard it edited out. I can't ever remember hearing it on the radio, but still, it's on various "Hits of the 80's" type compilations.

You mean white ******? Probably because the hand-wringing wokerati have decided it's okay because it refers principally to white people.

Yup (from wiki)

In March 2013, the radio station BBC Radio 6 Music played the song with the phrase removed, despite BBC radio stations having played the song uncensored for over 30 years.[nb 2] This decision attracted public criticism, with critics citing the intended anti-racist and anti-war theme of the single.[4][10][11][12] In January 2022, Costello said that he would no longer be performing the song and asked that radio stations no longer play it.[13] In an interview on Australian radio around the same time, Costello clarified he did not specifically ask radio stations to stop playing the song, but he did state that the way some radio stations edited or bleeped the phrase called attention to the phrase without engaging the context in which it was written.[14]

In terms of Fairytale of New York, The Pogues' official Twitter account responded to Laurence Fox's call to get the original to the top of the charts and "#DefundTheBBC" with, "fk off you little herrenvolk ste".

So (Louis etc) maybe consider what the writer wants?

I wonder if they had the N word in it or something like that would the current majority of people who voted 'it's inappropriate' still think that way?

As a white lgbtqi+ person who was raised catholic, I'm not sure what I should be most offended by here.
