Not heard quango in a while- Quasi autonomous non government organisation.

The forestry commission seems to be the most famous example, but their number is falling

There was a bonfire of them some years back. My wife worked for the Audit Commission and was made redundant when it was folded.

There was supposed to be, I don't believe it ever happened though?

Quangos (aka NDPBs) are the best of both worlds for those with their snouts in the proverbial trough. Guaranteed taxpayer funding with relatively little scrutiny or performance monitoring.

Well the Audit Commission was definitely got rid of. Not sure if any others went

Indeed. I may be slightly biased but the Audit Commission was probably one of the more important Quangos. Unlike most NDPBs its income was derived mainly from its audit clients, rather than from Central Govt. By scrapping it the Govt lost a huge amount of expertise in Local Govt auditing. Also they were never worried about upsetting their Clients since LAs were mandated to use them - this meant they were usually harsh but fair. The likes of firms like Grant Thornton were nowhere near as thorough (but they were a lot cheaper!)
