Do remember the guy lost his wife this year, there would be stress from the situation regarding his son, and he's 71 now, so possibly could be a combination of these before everybody wades into scandal rumours and nationalist slagging matches.

69 rather than 71. He had already announced his intention to step down in 2024, and presumably there were plans in place for an orderly succession, so his decision to abruptly quit is obviously raising some questions.

My money is on him being caught speeding in a 20 mph zone in the Welsh Labour Campervan.

I think you are being incredibly generous. Most common or garden gravy train thickos cruise through their careers without doing much at all, let alone inflicting irreversible damage. He has excelled.

The story seems to be evolving - the original BBC story linked above used the words "with immediate effect" and a few other sources that are an hour or so old are still using those terms, but it now seems like he's actually standing down in March. All rather confused, and the press conference seems to be a very last minute affair.

He is, I listened to his speech on the radio this morning. Accurately he said he hoped a successor was in place by Easter 2024

Can't put your admiration into words? Let's hold SKS' beer........

"UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said Mark Drakeford was a "true titan" of Welsh and Labour politics."
