Do remember the guy lost his wife this year, there would be stress from the situation regarding his son, and he's 71 now, so possibly could be a combination of these before everybody wades into scandal rumours and nationalist slagging matches.

69 rather than 71. He had already announced his intention to step down in 2024, and presumably there were plans in place for an orderly succession, so his decision to abruptly quit is obviously raising some questions.Edited by Taffer on Wednesday 13th December 11:34

The story seems to be evolving - the original BBC story linked above used the words "with immediate effect" and a few other sources that are an hour or so old are still using those terms, but it now seems like he's actually standing down in March. All rather confused, and the press conference seems to be a very last minute affair.
