Branded Good Suppliers Increasing Margins
Discussion
"the evidence collected also indicates that three-quarters of branded suppliers in products such as infant formula, baked beans, mayonnaise, and pet food have increased their unit profitability and, in doing so, have contributed to higher food price inflation. "

My outrage is limited. If people will pay the price of Heinz beans or whatever when the own label alternative is half the price and just as good hell mend them.

I certainly noticed the unit cost of Heinz products has shot up, soups, beans, sauces etc way beyond inflation. They seem to be on permanent offer now in the supermarkets which brings the cost down significantly and is acceptable again, the promotion has been on for months now so I think they have realised sales were dropping but they keep the offer running rather than reducing the price of a single can.

Of course we knew this. The data has been available for over a year. However plenty (including on here) want to blame pandemic response as the cause for mainly dogmatic reasons.
Companies will push prices up when they think they can get away with it. They had a scapegoat.
Many seem to have skin in the game or just simp on rich folk and probably believe in trickle-down economics. Companies will push prices up when they think they can get away with it. They had a scapegoat.
So true, I was just thinking about this yesterday in Aldi - Hellmans mayo in squeezy bottle £2.69, Bramwells version (which is equal or even better tasting), less than a quid.
Similar with their beans versus Heinz - much nicer and not 25% full of horrid thin sauce, and less than half the price.
It's the consumer who's the mug though for accepting it when there are much cheaper and often better alternatives.

That would explain why Heinz Tomato Soup has gone up from 95p to £1.70
Unfortunately I hate the own-brand Tomato Soup and my kid insist on Heinz ketchup.
Own-brand ketchup can easily be transferred into Heinz containers & I'll bet they won't tell the difference.Unfortunately I hate the own-brand Tomato Soup and my kid insist on Heinz ketchup.
In my case I went to own-label coke equivalent at literally a quarter of the price & couldn't tell much difference.

Brands are more expensive shock horror!

It's not that. It's the fact that they are refusing to adjust their prices back down even though the cost price of raw materials and transport etc have actually fallen in recent months (Lloyd Grossman - I'm looking at you).Who knew?

Some stuff I don't mind but using the mayo example, I prefer Hellmans, I use so little of it that a 2.89 bottle lasts quite a while so I pay premium, if I cant get that mayo I go without
Also it cant just be me who like Heinz beans? All the alternatives taste mostly terrible to me.

Mayo is open for debate but, surely, you cannot be serious about Heinz beans - they've been rank for years now with reduction of sugar an ever increasing bulking out of the can with gloopy sauce. Used to be nice, IMO, but utterly horrible now - again IMO!Also it cant just be me who like Heinz beans? All the alternatives taste mostly terrible to me.

Also most people on here view the reduction in sugar a good thing, you only have to spend 5 minutes on PH to see the powerfully built directors deriding "fatties" and their food choices
