Antisemitism in London
Discussion
Strangely, the usual posters on NPE haven't started this thread. I wonder why?
Let's have a balanced viewpoint if it's not too much to ask?
The march today is the first step toward rebalancing the debate, don't you think?

I expect there's a fair bit of overlap with the thread on the Palestine marches.
554 reports of antisemitic hate crimes in October v 44 last year and lots of accounts of Jews afraid to go out in public looking "visibly Jewish".
Obviously it's in the headlines right now because of the Israel/Gaza situation but it wouldn't even occur to me to think whether someone is Jewish let alone care if they were.
God knows what's wrong with some people.

Did I see Tommy Robinson arrested there today? The volume was down and I saw his gormless mug being collared. He really doesn't like anybody does he?!554 reports of antisemitic hate crimes in October v 44 last year and lots of accounts of Jews afraid to go out in public looking "visibly Jewish".

Who does Tommy Ten Names hate more today Jews or Muslims? Attention seeking tt taking advantage of an event to spread his poisonous views.Unfortunately the image of Jews all over the world is tarnished by the disproportionate (imo) Israeli response to the horrible Hamas attack, hence the rise in anti-semitism. It is going to take time for things to calm down again.
Sky fairies, religious zealots and racist dogma, what a bane on peaceful coexistence.

As a species we seem to need to divide to conquer, but once divided rarely concur. Antisemitism, islamaphobia, all sorts of racism and other prejudices. Wouldn't it be great if we could all take a step back and think. Be a little kinder. Don't worry about our individual or group's existential threats, but look at hatred and division as a collective one. One day, we might even celebrate our differences with open enquiring minds. Maybe. Peace and love all. Peace and love. X

The vast majority of people make no distinction between Jews, Israelis and Zionists. Sky fairies, religious zealots and racist dogma, what a bane on peaceful coexistence.
Agree with your last point. That said, it’s a difficult balance. For some, believing in what I consider to be utter nonsense, makes them a better happier person and many do a lot of good for the community.
The flip side of that coin are people to will wage war, kidnap and torture people based on a fanatical belief.
I struggle to pick a side in this particular conflict as both sides are acting on belief and committing horrific acts in the name of said belief.

Isn't religion mostly just the dividing line? As far as I know neither Judaism nor Islam require adherents to kill the other and Jews and Muslims have lived peacefully in the west and in the Arab world before. Agree with your last point. Really? In the circles I move in, people seem to be able to recognise that not all people born into a particular cultural category are the same.
Religion <rolls eyes>
A typical Jewish person living in the UK has nothing to do with military action in Gaza and a typical Muslim person in the UK has nothing to do with Hamas murdering people.
They are all people and a civilian being killed in an airstrike or a gun massacre are both awful.

I read a department of defence report once, albeit relating specifically to suicide terrorism but it possibly applies similarly, which stated that in the majority of cases religion wasn't the primary motivating factor, and largely just an identifier. Mostly the issue was territorial, and particularly when there was a significant power imbalance.
Bit like Northern Ireland, as protestants and catholics generally live happily side by side, until issues of territory and power result in a split.

How balanced has this thread started??And what bit of what debate needs rebalancing?? Has anyone on PH said that antisemitism is anything but deplorable?

It's also not helped, especially in the US and by extension 'online' that any negative comment of Israel, however carefully nuanced, or any comment seeming to support Palestine is labelled as Antisemitic.
It's very hard to disprove the Myth that Jews control large amount of the media and financial institutions, when people can and have been sacked, blacklisted or 'cancelled' for simply calling for a cease fire.
