OpenAI / Chat GPT implosion
Discussion
I'm sure there's plenty of news yet to come from this, but it's been a whirlwind few days!
The board of Open AI, creator of the uncannily good general AI Chat GPT fire their CEO & Co-Founder Sam Altman.
Shareholders go nuts, many demand his return.
Instead they appoint Emmett Shear, former CEO of streaming service Twitch.
Then over 700 of Open AI's <750 employees sign a letter demanding the return of Sam Altman and threatening to quit...
Except Microsoft, who also happen to be the largest shareholder of Open AI, snap him up and give him his own AI research team and offer to match salary of any Open AI employees who want to jump ship.
Open AI will have the IP, I guess, but it's still an extraordinarily rapid deflation of a company that looked to be going places. Unless Microsoft have decided that the employees are worth more than the company & are trying an effective hostile takeover on the cheap?
I've been too busy to keep up wth it but there's lots of gossip out there about who's/what's caused all the trouble.

I’m not at all clear on why the board sacked him so unceremoniously. It must have been something pretty serious.
Like the product was ste?Since all this 'AI' has come to the forefront, the internet has gone to the dogs, search engines send you drivel, everything goes around in circles.

It's the gift Microsoft were hoping for. I can only imagine the boffins at OpenAI weren't mature enough to cope with the sudden explosion in company value and demand. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!
It was the board, not the "boffins" who caused this. The boffins want to continue working for Altman, because they believe he's an excellent CEO.edit: And for those who don't seem to understand, the board was the board of the non-profit parent entity who effectively control the pro-profit arm which Altman was in charge of. The board doesn't necessarily care about the performance or output of the for-profit arm.

I think they're extremely concerned with the ethical & technological outputs of the for-profit arm.

“ OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman will return as boss just days after he was fired by the board, the firm has said.
The agreement "in principle" involves new board members being appointed, the tech company added.”

Yes - which looks murkier and murkier. I wonder what happened to the job at Microsoft - either he signed a contract and now has to get out of it (presumably OpenAI will pay his legals) or just that OpenAI has topped the MS offer with a big number and pen has yet to meet paper.
Microsoft owns a rather big chunk of openai and would be fine with him going back instead of working at microsoft now that they have installed more of 'their' people on the board. And in any case, the whole mission state of supposed altruism to ensure AI works for humanity as espoused by openai was always a bit of a farce and likely to collapse the moment commercial reality (ie greed) starting coming into it as valuations started coming in. It's more an acceptance of reality now for all involved one suspects.

Microsoft own 49% of OpenAI so it does make sense.

OpenAI defines AGI as autonomous systems that surpass humans in most economically valuable tasks….”WTF is wrong with humanity? Can the rest of us mere plebs have a vote please and dump these people and their f*king robots on the moon or something?

The famous Henry Ford quote about faster horses comes to mind.
