Yes I know the labour will get in if don’t vote Tory or the conservatives will get in if we don’t vote Labour…
However who could we vote for if this wasn’t the case??
I’m right wing but I’m quite impressed with this lot

Voting should be mandatory with the ballot paper having an option for “none of the above”
Perhaps then the politicians may see just how totally fked off most of us are with all of them.

Or a box for lucky dip. Then like jury service, someone is picked at random from the electoral roll.

UK politics needs to get back to basics, run the country and leave us all alone to get on with our lives, just be there when we need you...no stupid green nonsense which is ruining the country, nationalize the energy providers and water companies, tax all business at point of sale which would raise billions and give the workers a break from high taxes.

We all need a decent place to live walk the streets safely and a have good standard of living its not much to ask is it.

Oh and take a very hard line on crime.

I'll vote for whoever can deliver on all of the above.

This already exists if you actually fking engage with politics and vote for the person who matches your own views the most closely.

I don't vote for a party, I vote for my local candidate who I agree with the most, or at the very least disagree with the least. Over the years I have voted all over the parties.

If everyone did this and stopped thinking its either Lab or Con then we could actually move on from this farcical situation of a a supposed two party country.

MP are supposed to be representatives of their local area.

Exactly the point I was making , sadly you just get it’s a wasted vote or why don’t we have none of the above on the ballot paper.. hopefully this coming GE will be the first time people vote for what they want not the least worst option!!!

Am I right in thinking there are other countries where you can vote for what you want to happen rather than people/parties?

I fully agree. Our MP isn’t from my local area, he was parachuted in.

Well Switzerland have lots of referendums and other countries have proportional representation so the biggest vote gets the most influence ..

I've read through the party proposals and I think it likely that you are impressed by the sdp as they are right wing.

A bizarre hotch-potch of policies.

I agree.

I've been a floating voter almost all my life. Voted for all main parties and a number of indies in locals. I normally decide whom to vote for on the day but the libdems have been pushing in my true blue safe haven for the mediocre tory. They've got some seats on the local council and have made quite an impression. Mind you, I'll probably make up my mind on the morning of the GE though. Old habits and all that.

And another vote for Getragdogleg!

However, the problem is that most people don't think like this and treat political support like football; cheering for your own side no matter how rubbish they are and voting for your MP based on what they cam do for your local area can lend support to a party who you don't like. This is why parties like the SDP mentioned in the OP will never gain any traction, even though in theory, they could be what we need.

I have some sympathy with this approach. But it assumes any of the ducking imbeciles standing are worth a go.

I've voted independent before. But too often the choices are dire. The "you're all tts" option is needed.

Well you do have the right to spoil your ballet paper which I believe is counted. I agree though we need a "none of the above" option. And voting should be made mandatory. Then all those who shout about their vote making no difference, and not voting, will find out their vote does count.

Where I live our former MP was dismissed for dodgy dealings, a long time conservative constituency, the Tories flew in some bloke from Birmingham who didn't even know here the area was, or anything about it. This caused a back lash and protest vote resulting in a liberal MP. This is by the far best thing that has happened for our area and things are now getting done. Not sure this would happen during a general election though. Might shake them up if it did though.

Yep.

Another wolf in sheeps clothing.

That said, I fully support Proprotional Representation.

The current system is anachronistic, a left over from the time when a few as 2 people were eligible to vote in any given Constituency and Rottten Boroughs were a thing. The electorate would absolutely have known well the candidate they were electing.

In modern times, it's unrealistic to expect the candidate or the electorate to reach that level of familarity. Reform the system.
