Is it just me or does anybody else think the recent update for the BBC news app is like going backwards 10 years?

Yes, they ruined it.

I hated it, but imagined that I'd get used to it

- My experience has actually been that I barely use the BBC news app any more. When I do, I can't find anything that I want and it reminds me not to bother with it. I still hate it - Everyone in my family / friendship group has independently come to the same conclusion

I can only believe that user numbers have fallen through the floor. They must be tracking user numbers & sessions, so surely they'll make another change to fix it before it is too late....

The update is/ was a massive backward step. It made it much more difficult to find stories of interest and seems to have taken a lot of the old functionality away

Gave up with it when they forced you to log in to use the app widget.

They only drip feed you what they want you to hear anyway.

It’s ste, for some reason I still use it though. Really need to find another source.

Other than the layout, force feeding of stories they want you to read rather than a selection, what annoys me most is you cant rotate videos to landscape banghead

The recent update was the last straw, especially with the inability of watching videos in landscape (proclaimed as a benefit by the BBC!) and I have uninstalled the app.

The BBC do have form for destroying the function of a well-performing app - some 5(?) years ago when a seemingly not-fit-for-purpose re-design caused consternation among users (me included) and more than a flurry of new 1-star reviews.

The BBC News web-site, though, is currently still acceptable, I feel.

Yes, it's awful now.
Any decent alternatives for just getting an overview of the headlines of the day without the drivel?

Sky News, it's got adverts and isn't as good as the BBC app was but it's better than the BBC app is

Another for sky news. I've been using it the last year as found the BBC content was lacking and the notifications for breaking news seem to be better. and this was before the BBC app update!

Associated Press is allegedly the most independent - app seems pretty good.

It always amazes me that big companies can get things like this so wrong; the recent app store reviews are unanimous in it being dreadful.

Reuters app is decent. You can customise your feed preferences to a degree too.
