Air Quality on the London Underground
Discussion
I don’t use the tube much. When I have to, my journey starts on the Northern Line. It’s always been the case that blowing your nose, following a tube journey reveals black ‘soot’ or similar on the tissue.
Recent studies have shown that there are likely particulates present in the air on the tube which air quality testing may not detect.
Why is there no debate or apparent interest in the air quality people are exposed to when travelling on the tube?
Given the current furore over ULEZ this is surely topical?

Given the Mayors concern for the quality of London’s air I’m surprised he is so quiet about this.
He’s not been quiet, recently stating that air quality in the underground system is within H&S guidelines, nevertheless he’s asked TfL to look at ways to improve the air quality. His claim was contradicted by a study conducted in 2022 by a group of academics, experts eh?highway said:

Taxing each tube train £12.50 a day wouldn't raise much dosh. He is probably dreaming up a new scam of taxing each passenger an additional 'pollution' levy of £12.50 in addition to the fare because it is all the passenger's fault, obviously.
Just spent a day riding round all over the place, various lines, and I can safely say that its got a lot worse since i was left 10 years ago.
The Bakerloo seems to be hotter than Hades now, it was always warm but by gods its like a lava tube now, and the dust and crap that I was snotting out for the rest of the day was biblical.
Way worse than I remember it.

Strange, isn't it? Drivers are down there all the time and don't seem to complain.
Insofar as the staff go on strike pretty regularly and have just announced more strikes next month has anyone spotted air quality amongst their demands?
Frogs in water being brought slowly to the boil, you get used to it if it heats up over a long time, Mind you they are at the front on their own and not in the carriage with all the crowds.Insofar as the staff go on strike pretty regularly and have just announced more strikes next month has anyone spotted air quality amongst their demands?
I used to ride the tubes all the time and haven't for 10+ years, I was amazed at how much hotter it is.
Have the braking compounds changed so they are softer and generate more dust ?

By what mechanism do you think it has become hotter? The Bakerloo seems to be hotter than Hades now, it was always warm but by gods its like a lava tube now, and the dust and crap that I was snotting out for the rest of the day was biblical.

I’m pretty sure air down there is cleaner than it used to be. For starters, nobody smokes. I certainly don’t get the black snot like I used to in ‘80s.

The older deep lines have been getting steadily hotter since they were built. There is inadequate ventilation. I’m pretty sure air down there is cleaner than it used to be. For starters, nobody smokes. I certainly don’t get the black snot like I used to in ‘80s.
I rarely use the central line but when i do the noise is unbearable, even when i have in-ear headphones it's just far too loud. I don't remember it being this loud a decade or 2 ago. Before you could at least shout in conversation to someone, now you just give up and talk only when it's stopped at stations.

Braking, friction, heat from Motors and of course people all heat the tunnels up and over the course of years the system gets hotter.
I noticed how hot it was by going in the tube, riding several lines and the mechanism by which I think its got hotter is by thinking "fk me, its bd hot and stuffy in here, I don't recall it being this bad when I did it all the time".
The Bakerloo being one of the worst because it has not got many exits to the outside world like other lines that sometimes emerge into the open air.

Given that: every taxed car is either Euro 6 (diesel) or has an MoT emissions certificate, that paying Khan £12.50 a day doesn't convert exhaust gases into pure mountain air, and that Imperial College says ULEZ makes no difference to air quality, how is ULEZ not a scam? Not a scam.
