Reading about the super car transporter that flipped today. Following a link to some news site where they have smartphone footage, presumably from a member of the public and was reminded once again how bloody awful it is trying to watch camera phone footage taken in portrait mode on news media

Am I the only one who physically can't stand the way they add a right hand and left hand blurry panel, just to make the bloody phone video fit what ever it needs to fit. Surely it's not beyond the wit of the tech brigade to just fking post up the video in portait mode and have done with it. It drives my image processing centres into apoplexy and makes me actually start to feel physically odd.

Please just fking stop it!

Yup.

People who film in portrait will be first against the wall.

Thought it was just me, why don't they just leave the side panels blank? irked

I absolutely HATE vertical video with every fibre of my being. I wish phone manufacturers rotated the image on the sensor so that it was always horizontal, and then people could hold their phone in either orientation and still get horizontal video. Then Tiktok and others started normalising vertical video and now we're completely shafted. I think young people watch more video on their phones than they do on TV, so they don't see the annoyance factor. But I make a point of loudly mentioning the stupidity of vertical video whenever people are recording that way. That way they get a reprimand every time they watch the video, and I've even managed to get complete strangers to turn their phone horizontal with my remarks!

Yep, it’s filmed in portrait because it’s mostly consumed in portrait…not on the 6 o’clock news or a discoloured beige eMachine.

Actually, it's not the fact of vertical versus horizontal shooting. I don't care about that. It's the two fuzzy panels that flank the central video that does my brain in. You know, literally rather than figuratively. I can't watch it for long. I actually have to turn away or turn it off.

Plus

Its just visually bloody awful

amongst the plethora of cameras on the front of a phone you would think one would do a landscape at the same time just incase the idiot decides to send video to the bbc.

Human field of view is ~210 degrees side to side, ~150 degrees up & down. So your normal view of the world is rectangular and much wider horizontally.

No wonder some idiot filming in portrait feels instinctively wrong.

This

and it is getting serious as vertical videos have spread to the girls on Youtube. Say no to vertical videos.

It's so bad now that I have actually worked on shows as a proper cameraman with proper expensive camera equipment where the cameras have special mounts to put them on their sides when the client is TikTok or Insta'.

Just get a Motorola phone - video is horizontal out of the box!

What's worse is when you're working on something that's landscape and the client asks you to include something they've shot on their phone in portrait and then wonder why their bit looks like Lego.
