Grim story that has now concluded in the courts.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-cen...

One thing I ask. If the driver had stayed at the scene and called the police and owned up to it would he have got less? The law doesn't clearly distinguish between owning up or not, although this is a clear deception for perverting the course of justice.

Any lawyers able to explain how it works as surely we should always push for honesty and owning up?

In my opinion, 12 years is nowhere near enough given the circumstances.

Causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink can have a maximum of life imprisonment. Adding in the other offenses of preventing a lawful burial, failing to stop after an accident etc etc.

What a scum bag, along with his moronic brother. Thankfully his presumably, now, ex-girlfriend did the right thing!

Totally agree such a nasty crime in so many ways. Would I help my brother in that scenario? I hope I wouldn't and would talk sense to him to turn himself in.

I hadn't read much about her, seems she came forward recently because she had quite the ordeal - police pressured her into staying with the brothers to gather evidence, with threats of prosecuting her if she did not cooperate:

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/w...
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/08/20/caroli...

".... the trial judge had permitted a BBC documentary crew access to the court to film proceedings.. After protesting that she did not want to appear on film, she fled and a warrant was issued for her arrest. She said a helicopter was dispatched to search for her and she was locked in custody for two days, suffering a mental breakdown"

Sky News interview - seems she's not liked by locals in the area for "grassing":

Blimey that is all a bit sinister, albeit to bring a horrible crime to an end.

Should have got the 12 years just for the perverting the course of justice by hiding the body, then another even more lengthy sentence for the actual death.

Yes - the police and other authorities should be doing their best to treat her properly.

They've seemingly done the opposite. Reading that it'd be easy to understand why anyone else in a similar situation in future, or generally anyone having knowledge of crime of any sort, may choose not come forward.

We get hints of that mindset on PH whenever there's a topic about dashcam footage being submitted.

Most of us left 'grassing' behind on the primary school playgrounds. It astounds me that adults think there's anything wrong in reporting wrongdoing.

I think most adults recognise that there a line.

Reporting your mate to the police for going a bit fast on the motorway? Grassing.

Going to the police after your boyfriend tells you they killed someone and buried them... that's not grassing, thats just being a sane normal human.

I'm still too scared to disclose I like Abba at that stage of a relationship.

Probably pre any kind of farting with impunity as well.

What a pair of horrible articles, hope they don’t make it out, and scammers victimising the girl for “grassing”, they killed someone and the buried the body ffs, someone’s relative in a shallow grave and they don’t know where he is but telling the police is somehow worse ?

Never be scared to disclose you like Abba. It's a great way to filter out the cultureless swines.

Ludicrous. Presumably drunk driving is acceptable to that particular group of clowns. In which case it would be good to see a few prosecutions.

I've followed this on the 'net from the start.

The guy appeared ill prepared for this cycle journey right from the start. He started the cycle in the evening and intended to cycle through the night. His equipment was amateur, but fair play to him he got on with it, and then he disappeared between bridge of orchy and tyndrum.

The brothers and the family in the Auch glen were flagged from the start to be 'worth looking at'. Turns out that was right.

He probably thought it would be better to do it in the evening and overnight due to much quieter traffic, BUT although that's true, the people on the road are driving very fast, and, as in this case are more likely to be pissed (and/or other substances).

I do a lot of cycling and sometimes ride very late at night, but I try and keep to the very quiet country roads because A-roads are just too dodgy no matter how many bright lights you have.

12 years when you have killed someone then covered it up.

Remorse only shown when the s got found out.

Sentence is ludicrously lenient.

There's a sum total of zero choice in that part of the world. Not that it typically matters, because this was the A82 when I was cycling LEJOG, about halfway between Bridge of Orchy and Glencoe:

Now, I did have some impromptu fog to deal with, as you can see in the distance! But outfitted some lights and carried on.
