fk that.

Bit of a harrowing comment here on the BBC;

Eight people are stuck in the cable car. Six of them are between ten and 16 years old. They are students.

Gulfaraz is not a student, he is 20 years old.

There is also a heart patient in this cable car. He is 16 years old. He has been unconscious for the past two hours, according to Gulfaraz.

We were told this an hour ago by Gulfaraz but his phone is now silent.

Been reporting all rescued; great outcome and not at all what I feared might be the outcome.

All 8 people on board have now been rescued.

Bravo to everyone involved in getting them down.

Yeah good news that they have all been rescued.

I'll go on any rollercoaster in the world with no fear and have been to some great theme parks through the years.

The only thing that makes me nervous are the cable cars at Alton Towers, hate the blasted things and avoid them where I can.

Looking at the latest footage, can anyone ID what it's made from. ( apart from spit and string)

I've been on the Fuente De in Spain, at the top it's practically being hauled up slowly, vertically. Squeaky bum time.

Rust mainly, useful as it’s lighter than steel. Probably the reason the third and final wire didn’t snap. Added lightness, Colin Chapman would have loved it.

At least you're not trapped by ridiculously over engineered doors.

I was very happy we only used Fuente De going up - walking back down was by far more enjoyable in my book!

I think describing that coffin in the sky death trap as a 'cable car' is wishful thinking of the highest order.
We have all seen some cobbled together lethal contraptions, but that's in the world top ten!

Is that drone footage before or after they cut the doors off?! Seen more robust open ski lifts!

This is a custom-built cabin. Apparently some use re-purposed car bodies.

On the plus side, redundancy worked. 2 support cables; 1 snapped; 1 kept them alive. Here's a Pakistani cable car with only a single cable:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq3dUm7dpZY&ab... and the whole thing driven by bolting a drum onto a driven car wheel.

Here's a similar "doli" cable car which failed, killing 12: https://www.geo.tv/latest/147406-10-dead-as-chairl... and there are many other reports.

So this one was newsworthy primarily because it was better-engineered than many, leaving people alive to rescue.

On the down side, I don't see much evidence of a safety brakes...
