Interesting article https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/aug/...

Personally I think it has got worse since the pandemic as the main stream muttonheads appear to be grazing in ever odder circles, with algos and grifters feeding them more and more guff.

Anyone got a mate or two who are well into the 15-minute cities, pro Putin, 'WEF', cor blimey guv use cash not cards as 'they' track you types?

...perhaps more interestingly, how have you gone about de-radicalising them from the st they consume online?

There are probably those who thought/think groups into "alternative health" woo woo were a bit weird too.

The problem with us all is that we think our own pecadilloes are just fine, it's everyone else (usually those who we disagree with) who are the whack jobs.

It's always been thus. We've just become better about propogating it more quickly and widely.

Er…no. In fact the only time I ever hear any of this stuff, from anyone, is in threads on here.
Nowhere else, at all, in my life are these things even remotely discussed or mentioned.

Perhaps OP, you might want to try living a normal life?

I know someone who urged me to take down all the 5G masts I could get my hands on. I no longer know this person.

I could understand people being seduced by stuff that, y'know, makes sense.

I don't get how the insulting bilge that are currently the most popular populist poisons can be taken seriously by anyone who isn't pissed out of their head. A toddler wouldn't be convinced by it.

Interesting - and reflects badly on PH.

My life is quite abnormal as with one hat on I am exposed to a perhaps wider range of views / cross section of society than most. I am not saying that is a good thing smile …but it is interesting, in a way.

Dark Facebook/Whatsapp groups etc are directly and softly radicalising people in odd ways. It appears it is becoming more recognised.

Radicalization is pretty much always a reaction to something. What recent events in medical, social and political areas do you think their radicalization may be a reaction to?

The news is no longer reporting about what happened yesterday, they are now competing with absolute bobbins on social media. The trouble is that 99% of the population still believe all they read or are told.

+1. I know maybe two people who engage in some conspiracy stuff about covid and pastes it over social media. They're pretty much at arms length. Other than that I'm not aware of anyone who's been particularly zealous about anything like that.
Outside of PH!

Me too, but that might be because 70% of my time online is probably spent on PH. I think if I spent as much time on Twitter or any other SM sites I’d find similar pockets of wibble.

Keep away from Dark Facebook and Dark whatever-else-it-was. You only need to open the page up and you're hooked.

Most loons know if they rant and rave about the WEF grand plan and all that guff in real life they’ll look just a little silly.

Although… not many of them actually have a real-world social circle to rant and rave to.

It has indeed become far more of an issue since the start of the pandemic?. I wonder why?. Could it be that the lockdown of our economy and society for months on end on a flimsy pretext, followed later on by trying to force people to take a new vaccine with dangerous side effects for many, has led to greater scepticism of our governing class?

Action leading to reaction and if those in charge want to defuse the situation perhaps a bit less ranting about "conspiracy theorists" and a bit more rebuilding their credibility might be in order. As a starting point they might want to reflect on the fact that restrictions on personal movement (15 minute cities) and central bank controlled digital currencies are not going to be very popular right now, if ever.

I think I am that guy. I love a good conspiracy rabbit hole. The pandemic was a load of complete rubbish and the notion that we're run by a cabal of satan worshipping child molesters explains so much so well that I'd be surprised if it were not true.

I do try to maintain hope that democracy and liberty will win through, or that the inherently confrontational relationships between politicians and media and can hold them to some sort of account, but it is very difficult
