north sea car transporter on fire/sinking 1 dead
Discussion
a car transporter the MV Fremantle Highway en route from Bremerhaven to Port Said is currently on fire and abandoned off the coast of Holland
one crew member is reportedly dead and others of the 23 strong crew jumped off the ship into the sea to escape the fire
the ship reportedly carrying 2857 cars 25 of which are EV’s
the fire appears to have started in one of the EV’s and could not be fought with water according to the dutch coast guard
the abandoned ship is still on fire and in danger of sinking

If it’s true about the EV I can see this having massive repercussions on the delivery times on any further EV’s until safer practices are implemented. Perhaps they could have a special area where they push them overboard if one catches fire
RIP to the crew member.
They'll still burn though, even in the sea.RIP to the crew member.
Maybe they should all have a built in fire extinguisher system ?

i’m a regular ferry user and noticed last time i was on one that the operator had stuck big yellow “”EV” stickers on the windscreens of all the hybrid/BEV vehicles prior to getting onto the ferry
i couldn’t say whether they were parked in a particular area on the vehicle decks though
clearly it was a risk identifier for the ferry operator mind

Ebikes not allowed on TFL trains in london but you still see them on the platform. I can only assume some TFL staff are pretty ignorant.
Less places to escape to on a train in a tunnel than on a honking great ship.
Ebikes are not banned (yet). E scooters and unicycles are though.Less places to escape to on a train in a tunnel than on a honking great ship.

Time, being able to push them out is probably the best solution.
How do you push them if they're in park / handbrake on and ablaze ?Flooble said:

How do you push them if they're in park / handbrake on and ablaze ?The suggestion was to have EVs in their own section, with the sea easily accessible. With 25 cars out of 2500 being EVs, you can pretty easily have the front nearest the sea reserved for them. So you only need to get one normal car going to be able to ram the EV off the deck.
Now, granted, being able to get it off the deck itself is more of an issue - not sure how easily accessible the outside world is on these ships.

in an emergency I think I'd still happily bin however many cars were in front of the burning one, if it saved the ship.

this gives an idea of what these things are like inside, good luck to anyone trying to extricate and isolate a burning car The suggestion was to have EVs in their own section, with the sea easily accessible.
