I thought it was all working as intended post Brexit. Cut EU migration but allow skilled workers + students, and any legal refugees (Ukraine / HK).

8% of the 600k net migration was the boat people, and that should be tackled, but can we really cut the number of care workers / fruit pickers we get from abroad without having a plan to fill those jobs?

There was and is no plan. The Tories are just 'winging it'.

That's being very kind...

It's almost as if they looked at the terrible options and then decided to do the worst thing possible.

They should admit we need immigration.

We should allow immigration for any shortfall in skills or people, be that doctors or fruit pickers.

Targets and schemes to reduce legal immigration are pointless if you need people.

I love that this they reckon that failing to sort it out "risks eroding public trust". Is there any left to erode?

The irony of Lee "still supporting Johnson even after he resigned in complete and utter disgrace" Anderson having the brass neck to lecture anyone on eroding public trust must be some kind of satire.

Yes, 10% of NHS posts are unfilled and the latest Tory plan is to cut immigration by reducing visas for care workers and increasing salary thresholds to above what nurses earn. jester

This is a pretty cynical blue meat delivery.

I'm not sure who I despise most, the New Conservatives or the red-wall voters who lap this st up.

What most upsetting to me, is not immigration, but the total lack of ability to deal with it.

If people come here to work, it should be easy for them to get working.

If we are to have any meaningful borders (and if not WTF are the rest of us wasting time queuing up to show passports?) and security, then the home office ought to have the resources to find criminals and undesirables quickly and effectively and have the means to turf them out.

The concept of "students" was very stretched when they started bringing in a large number of dependents. the concept of "skilled" workers also became very stretched.

This was all due to rules in the Bojo the clown years.

Which bit?

That they have a new plan, somewhat admitting the old plan has failed, or that the Tory party are once again tearing themselves apart?

It's a report by a batst side of a currently rather batst party and will be nothing more than tomorrows chip paper. Nothing, absolutely nothing, will come of it. If they did restrict care worker and nurses visas the NHS would grind to a halt more quickly than it is doing now, and in the minds of voters a working NHS trumps all concerns about immigration any day of the week.

If you can't see that take a trip to Specsavers.

Apparently its a good idea to try and limit immigration in the sectors that you desperately need migrant workers to fill, sectors absolutely vital to basic human life.

They have a plan though - the army of lazy unemployed pensioners / retired people / sick are going to take the jobs up.

Immigration was always this myth that caused so much froth and outrage through Brexit. Immigration was never the issue, it was our welfare system and how easy it is to access and also how it supports a way of life.

Why is our welfare bill so high when we have so many jobs available? Brits were conditioned through the new labour years to take state handouts rather than earn it themselves ("tax credits" = redistribution of wealth with a fancy name). Try taking it off people after you have given it to them!

The hard working foreigners have then been driven out and we are left with a gap to fill that no one will take because people think they are entitled to high pay for unskilled work. The entire thing is a self created farce.

Why can we not defend our borders as an island nation is another weird one. All a massive farce.

You can just imagine the conversation on the door step ahead of the next election....

"Unfortunately Granny won't be able to get the care she needs, but we have cut immigration by 20%, so that's good! Less spending on benefits, more British houses for British people!

Oh, the boat people, the asylum seekers? Well, no, we've not managed to do anything about that, but we have reduced the number of care workers and nurses who are coming here, so that's a success, right? British homes for British people!"

Any sensible heads at Tory Party HQ must be crying into their coffee and preparing their CVs....

Total ste.

The welfare bill is so high because people live longer now and there is a large number of people signed off sick - where are your figures to support a large number of people living off benefits while not working? Universal credit is absolutely a requirement if you are a carer or Amazon worker etc, how else do you think they are able to survive, unless you want to raise min wage of course, but I expect not as its against the 'free market' cult, eh?

'New Labour' has hardly conditioned anyone to think this way, you do know they were last in power 13 years ago and we have experienced the tory austerity years since - if you want to look to a government of handouts then look no further than the current party in power, help with energy bills, furlough, etc.

The hard working people from overseas have gone because we were stupid enough to vote for Brexit and worked for lower wages than many people in the UK could realistically survive on as they lived in multiple occupancy housing for short periods of time before leaving with the money they earned and enjoyed it having a higher spending power back in their home country.

If you think people should que up to work as a carer for minimum wage in the UK, good luck.
