Did try and find a thread for this but tonight France is on the edge of a state of emergency due to widespread rioting after a young man was shot and killed a few days ago.

45000 riot police deployed.. apparently the optics around Macron attending an Elton John gig while Paris burns have not landed well…

I note French police are calling the rioters 'vermin'. And they wonder why they're not particularly popular.

The French approach to policing seems especially wrongheaded compared to the type of the country they think they are.

And the Telegraph is becoming more erect by the second. I wonder if they have ever, ever published a positive headline about France. Ever.

They love a good riot.

Any excuse!

It’s all a bit reminiscent of the Mark Duggan ststorm from 10 years ago over here.

But the French authorities seem a lot more gung ho in this case.

If the Gendarmerie get involved it could be very messy indeed.

Currently on holiday with the family in mid/northern France. We were in Compienge on Tuesday to catch the train to Paris and apparently it’s kicking off there (25 minutes away).

We are due to travel back via Calais tomorrow; satnav gives one of the routes as passing via Riems, but may take an alternative depending on what happens tonight.

Pretty isolated in a rural area here so it’s hard to gauge whether the Telegraph article is a load of frothing nonsense or it actually has some weight.

The police union statement is extraordinary in some ways:

union said:
“Faced with these savage hordes, calling for calm is no longer sufficient, it must be imposed!,” they wrote, saying they were waging a fight against “vermin” and threatening a revolt.
.

Okay.

The initial UK news reports were quite strange, with the reporters seemingly tip-toeing around the detail of the story, determined not to mention the ethnic background of the driver or the area he lived in, or any details about a 17 year old failing to stop for Police.
And no early statement from Police leaders, but one from the President.

Fairly obvious why the kid got himself Darwined.

Riots are just the local summer recreation and this was a handy excuse. Some of the locals can't see that it doesn't exactly help with making the police think they're a threat.

Lots of politicians sticking their oar in hasn't helped either. If you don't think people getting shot is a reasonable outcome then why have the police routinely armed?

Not obvious to me; care to explain it?

We travel back through Calais tomorrow and are planning a route via Reims. I can’t see that they’d be demonstrating on the autoroute though so I’m sure it’ll be ok.

This is the sort of analysis a nine year old might pen, if asked.

Try driving off when a police officer has a pistol aimed at you and see what happens.

It doesn't matter if they're in the right or not, in that situation you jump through whatever hoops they want you to.

Or you can fk around and find out.
