In fairness the Lad got Life, with a very short (for a life sentence) minimum term. if he doesn't follow the rules in prison he may never be let out and if he is he'll be on licence and liable to be sent back to prison until he dies.
He sounds like a troubled Kid more than a 'real' wrong 'un. He was looking for something to give his life purpose and chose very poorly. His Mum, Mosque Leaders and his fellow Muslims all shopped him in because they were worried about him,
I think the Judge had struck a good compromise between public safety and rehabilitation.

But I doubt that it will wash with the "hang him high as an example to others" extremists who will no doubt be along shortly.

Oh yeah for sure. Can see his CV now.. "Ex Reformed Terrorist" now totally fixed by the establishment seeks employment in local bomb factory...When he gets out and tries again you can quote me on that because he will. All he's learned inside is how to make a better bomb.
