So the Torys rubber stamped HS2 then without more than a few minutes debate decided to implement net zero which is one of the most costly and pointless exercises ever, then when there was a chance for our country to be in at the beginning of battery technology
They (Sunak as chancellor) failed to support it
So now we are going to have to buy yet more stuff from the Chinese and then have to give 10% duty to the Eu
Are our leaders in the pay of the Chinese or just absolutely st ???

Oh and why when energy costs are causing inflation and driving out manufacturing why are they allowing the importing of billions of dollars worth of gas and fuel when we sit on our own and could be extracting it and using the money to build up our nuclear power industry ??

Yes, twice. Why are you surprised?

The tories exist to make themselves and their friends richer. They have no plan or inclination to do anything else.

Sadly no one else does either. Just continuing in the path of becoming more like the US and less like the rest of Europe.

Ironically it’s those that want independence from Europe and sovereignty that will suffer the most. Good chance I’ll see out my days in the UK, good chance my children won’t.

They know they're out next year.

Imagine what they're up to behind the scenes when there's even less accountability than usual.

My understanding is: the UK sold off its publicly owned energy companies, making some people incredibly rich, but preventing the UK from being able to extract the fossil fuels we have "ourselves".

We can grant (sell) licences to these companies, who will then extract and sell fuel on the global energy market. If we choose to buy them back, it will be at the market rate.

Don't like a free market? Shame, as we used the free market approach to generate much of our wealth.

Don't like selling off of energy companies? Shame, as they were subsidised by taxpayers who were able to see tax cuts as a result, and have leveraged in a lot of private investment.

Having your cake and eating it would be nice, but I doubt "they" have made these policy decisions to annoy people on pistonheads- there's probably a complicated set of factors that preceded each decision. And once taken, it can't be undecided.

I voted TOry from 1997 till the last election, I was their demographinc, highly educated, professional, asspirational etc. Then Covid, Bojo Sleaze, IR35, VIP fast lane fraud, rigged leadership contests (penny M should have been ahead of trus), PM's family tax affairs etc

They just did not try an hide their contempt for people an so we are left with a PM who will hold out till i guess Sept 24 and then go ooff to do speaches an live off family money again then 10 years of labout making it worse till next tory hopeful arrives its st

The highlighted sentence does read like something Trump would have written (apart from not being in capitals).

I recall reading the Stern review nearly 20 years ago which sets out why it is not pointless, and far less costly than the consequences.

I'm sure there was more than a few minutes debate, but there is several years worth of debate on the "climate change - political discussion" thread, which I'm sure covers this topic many times over.

Opinions may vary, but climate religion has pretty much won now. Either there will be no climate problem, and climate science takes the glory for preventing it. Or there will be a climate problem, and it will be the fault of everyone who didn't listen to climate science (turbobloke - you're top of the list)

As ever, we shall have to wait and see.

Sunak made millions in the city. He doesn’t need family money.

Wasn’t it going to cost more to stop HS2 than to continue it when it was “rubber stamped”?

If you are referring to the British Volt plant in Northumberland that went bankrupt, the govt quite rightly said that BV had to hit certain milestones before putting in tax payers money - BV failed to do that and failed to attract other investors too as their product was not investable apparently.

Net Zero was voted in by Parliament with an almost unanimous approval from MPs, IIRC there were only 3 that didn’t support it. The two main parties are both very much in favour of it still so we’re stuck with it whether you like it or not.

Instead of those points you could have chose the very low growth since 2010 when we failed to adequately change policies to the new world order following the financial crash. That would have done for starters as they are now just managing the decline of the U.K. by the look of it.

I personally don’t think it’s to do with lining the pockets of their friends, I think they simply have no talent and not a clue what to do, and sadly neither do the Labour Party.

his wealth stems from marrage an connections you can even look up the source of his hedge fund if you care to. Marry one of Elons kids and you too can start a hedge fund work at Goldmans etc. The PMs sucess can be traced to marrying the right person (I assume he fell in love when they met when doing MBA etc an nothing more than that)

Personally I couldn’t give a flying fk how much money he or any other politician has, providing they stick to the law, and this bit is important, they actually have the skills, ability and talent to do the fking job.

Clearly the current crop at Westminster don’t fit the second point.

Alistair Heath has gone full scorched earth this evening.

Pour a glass of red, light a fat cigar and feast on this glorious takedown of the current Tory government.

the closing paragraph will do.

"The Tories are as bad as the Eurocrats they replaced. It has been a catastrophic record of failure, an unpardonable exercise in second-hand, pantomime conservatism. Voters don’t like being taken for fools, and their revenge will be savage."

Got to say he really encapsulates a lot of my thoughts too. Doesn’t hold back at all. I say that as a life long conservative voter, but his piece is spot on.

It’s hard to pick a paragraph out to paste here there is so much to chose from!

Indeed, there's quite a bit of anger out there in middle England right now and his piece just captures the mood does'nt it?

It's a well measured boot to the groin and a bunch of fives without giving anyone a hospital pass.

Tory’s have been pretty bad but anyone thinking labour will be any improvement will be sorely disappointed.
Net zero rushed through will be the most stupid mistake of all though.
