I think this is a bit misleading, as students will probably go back to their home countries, but i'm still surprised at the numbers.

True, though in a couple of years though a labour government will more than likely really show what failure looks like.

It seems that way.

Anyhoo, how can Brexit be the tories fault?

The great British public wanted a referendum and got one.

We have gone from letting in mainly low skilled workers to letting in high fee paying students and well paid skilled workers. Along with many mainly short term people in need.
How is that fking it up?

There's a shortage of low skilled workers in industries such as farming.
We have less control of our borders than ever.....boat people

In 2022 45,000 people came over in boats - I don't think they are allowed to work so not sure what category they come in.

Agree with your points though.

Some other stats on migration to the UK during 2022

And we might get another one if the lib-dem coalition stories are anything to go by.

Wonder what the immigration stance will be? Vote for us to rejoin the EU and get immigration back to where it was pre-brexit?

Why do the number of net migrants actually matter that much?

So long as we're able to user that migration to drive economic growth and help fund the ageing UK population, then surely it's a good thing?

On the news i only heard kind of second hand that there is an increase in homeless people or those in temp accommodation, but would the current figures potentially include those new to the country?

i think it depends on which countries they have come from. "Student visas" are an easy way of getting into the country legitimately but AFAIAA there is little to prevent them overstaying and disappearing into the black economy.

The British state is close to bankruptcy and has little ability to provide the housing and infrastructure necessary to support net migration at these levels, even if it had the ideological willingness, which is often absent when it comes to things like housing and (in particular) roads.

On the other hand I do partially agree with the poster above that you have to look beyond the headlines and net migration is partly driven by a rebound in student numbers post covid and more skilled VISAs.

There is, as always, a balance to be drawn and I suspect based on some of the stories out there, such as "students" bringing with them multiple dependents, that they have got the balance wrong and will be seen as having betrayed many of those who voted for them in 2019, some for the first time.

Yeah, but at least it is our country that is choosing who to allow to legally work and live here.

Numbers aren't the problem, as long as it's the right type of Students/Workers coming in.
