Cricketer extraudinaire turned Pakistani PM arrested, followed by massive counter protest. Where will this all end? Nuclear war with India? Storm in a tea cup? Somewhere in between?

No idea but he was a fun bloke on the London party scene in the 90's!
I remember watching him on TV give my old Classics teacher a rather stressful time when he was batting against Khan - a quick Google leads me to think it was the 3rd Test at Leeds in 1982, said Classics master being far more adept with the ball than the bat, although looking at the match stats it appears he survived Khan's onslaught and was bowled out by one of the other members of the Pakistan team. It was over 40 years ago, and memories fade. I can't remember much of the Classics tuition either.bongtom said:
I missed the bit where it is the concern of India?
There are burney/fightey protests in Pakistan on a monthly basis. It's why the cops are so good at it!
Many moons ago I was at the Waga border crossing to watch the evening closing ceremony. Tour guide was convinced WW3 would break out here with both countries having nukes. If Pakistan descends too far down the current path, perhaps they'll lash out to divert from their own issues? Argentina did similar which led to the Falklands war....There are burney/fightey protests in Pakistan on a monthly basis. It's why the cops are so good at it!

No chance of nuclear war. It's basically a fight between the Pakistan Army and Imran Khan.https://www.itv.com/news/2023-05-09/ex-Pakistan-pm...
Like most institutions in Pakistan the ARmy is corrupt. However, previously it was just the Politicians that the "Corruption" finger was pointed at. Since Imran's been in power (and to be fair to him he HAS tried to clean up the worst bits) a lot of Pakistanis have realised that the ARmy is just as bad if not worse.

That would explain it.

Who was the teacher?Seems unlikely that any of the current England team will teach classics in retirement

Looking at the scorecard, can only be Chris Tavare?Seems unlikely that any of the current England team will teach classics in retirement

Vic Marks - Somerset and England, and occasional Classics master in the off season. Nice chap, and when he was teaching us he would probably have been only in his early twenties. I remember him being horribly embarrassed when the new unexpectedly un-expurgated editions of the Lysistrata he'd distributed to the class turned out to use rather more earthy language than he was expecting.
Ah right, the days when players had other jobs for the winter, I’m sure Ben Stokes could do a spot of Geography teaching to help keep the wolves from the door Countdown said:
Thanks - very interesting perspective. I guess they didn't call it "The Independent" for nothing. It is utterly depressing though.

The Somerset team of that era was a bit handy with the likes of Richards, Botham, Garner, Rose, Denning, Roebuck etc...
I met him about 15 years ago in the BA first class lounge at Heathrow T5.
I can’t recall if I was flying to Boston or Washington, but both our flights were delayed, I think he was flying to Pakistan but I don’t recall that detail.
We spent about 2 hours chatting about politics and cricket and what he thought would become of Pakistan and India.
He struck me as a highly intelligent and kind individual full of pride and passion for his country.
A lovely man.
Hope the political stuff does not get dangerous for him!
