Swear allegiance to the king?
Discussion
Apparently the public will be asked if they want to swear allegiance to King Charles as part of the coronation, in place of the “usual” swearing of allegiance by the peers.

The public will be given an active role in the ceremony for the first time, with people around the world set to be asked to cry out and swear allegiance to the King.
This "homage of the people" replaces the traditional "homage of peers" where hereditary peers swear allegiance to the new monarch. Instead everyone in the Abbey and watching at home will be invited to pay homage in what Lambeth Palace described as a "chorus of millions".
The order of service will read: "All who so desire, in the Abbey, and elsewhere, say together: I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God."
Is this a good idea, or rather misjudged? Personally I think it’s a bloody stupid idea…This "homage of the people" replaces the traditional "homage of peers" where hereditary peers swear allegiance to the new monarch. I suspect those turning up to see the show will love it.
Another small number of people will hate it and actively react against it in some way.
The vast majority won't care less or have any idea.
See Emergency Alert thread for clues as to who will do what. Another small number of people will hate it and actively react against it in some way.

It’s harmless, but a bit out of touch I think.
I certainly won’t be swearing allegiance to him.
Out of touch probably sums up how I feel about it. I can sort of sense the thought process - let’s not have the peers do it, let’s involve “the people”. I certainly won’t be swearing allegiance to him.
I don’t particularly want to abolish the royal family’s part in UK daily life - I’m “pro-royal” in that sense. I certainly don’t want to pledge my allegiance to the king though. Seems very archaic and not in line with the times.

I was just reading about this and thinking how to articulate how I felt about it.I don’t particularly want to abolish the royal family’s part in UK daily life - I’m “pro-royal” in that sense. I think you've just summed it up for me.
Isn't this the sort of thing one indulges in during panto season with young children? I supposed its apt, chanting along with a bunch of people in fancy dress.
Totally irrelevant IMO, but the crowds that will have camped out on the Mall will lap it up & there'll be endless coverage in the likes of the Daily Mail to keep them happy.

Those who want to, can swear.
Those who don’t want to aren’t being made to.
Can’t really see what the issue is.
The issue is that they've chosen to put it in something that will be watched on TV by millions and millions of people across the world. Those who don’t want to aren’t being made to.
Can’t really see what the issue is.

Personally, I think it's nonsense, but if some people get enjoyment out of swearing their allegiance to the king, good luck to them. I expect to see Nigel Farage and the other flagshaggers sharing their allegiance videos on social media.
