What next? A convicted paedo gets anonymity because he threatens the court he will top himself if they don't grant it.

Do the crime, take the consequences. If the greater good means one or two paedophiles kill themselves I'm afraid that is just a price that has to be paid.

Given the OP's thread title, I think it's high time we brought back capitalisation punishment.

Grumps.

Along with poor spelling and random apostrophes.

In what way is society harmed by a convicted criminal being given anonymity?

His neighbours won't know he is a threat to their children.

Presumably he'll still be on the sex offender's register. They've just kept his name out of the press.

How sweet. What was his other request, milk and two sugars...utter nonsense to concede to this convict's whim.

Still, the Courts know best, as we see frequently.

Other than press reports how will anybody know he is on the sex offenders register?

If they're on the register, the police will be aware and monitoring. That's what you'd want isn't it?

The only outcome of releasing the person's name in the press is an increased chance of vigilante action.

I have no idea if my neighbours have convictions. Do you?

No, but my trial isn't until next month.

I suspect OP will be first to complain when his local paper starts publishing lists of who's been fined for speeding.

I would have if they were convicted in a high profile case and the court didn't keep their name secret.

No actually I would prefer to know if a neighbour was a danger to my family. Police monitoring?
