Six Police officers raid on far right in Essex
Discussion
Knock knock.
Come in
Chief, we have just had an anonymous call that the White Hart pub have got some golly**g toys on display in the bar.
Sarg, activate operation 'happy clap' send six officers, two dog units and get the chopper in the air and have the firearms unit on standby, oh and alert the Home Office.
Sarge, right-o Chief.
Chief, oh, and make sure this gets recorded as a far right terrorist hate crime, we need to bolster the figures so make some stuff up.

Fair enough, the dolls had no place being on display, but six officers? I really would rather they were out expending as much time, energy and zeal solving and preventing real crimes. This issue needed to be dealt with, maybe first with a phonecall and then a visit shortly after by a lone officer, not six!
I'm bound to be completely wrong having this outlook and await my wrong-think to be corrected.

"The raid comes after the couple refused to remove the black-faced dolls after the local authority received a complaint in 2018."
and
'Mrs Ryley said today: 'I don't understand why we have to go through all this again.
'We have the police taking away information that is literally the history of this country. And why?"
Does kind of suggest there might be a little more to this than a harmless couple harassed over some loveable cuddly soft toys.

I thought the way the law works around this sort of thing is that something can constitute a hate crime without it literally being written down on a list of "illegal things".Hate crime can fall into one of three main types: physical assault, verbal abuse and incitement to hatred

You can buy them in shops or online,at least you could until very recently.
How anyone can say they are a hate crime is beyond me,and most people I'd imagine
I bought a Robinson’s China one playing a saxophone and a golliwog badge from a shop in Basingstoke as my ex wanted them. How anyone can say they are a hate crime is beyond me,and most people I'd imagine
She’s from Zimbabwe and black.

Which one of these do you think the dolls fall into?

Let's go with the Essex Police definition from here shall we?Hate crime can fall into one of three main types: physical assault, verbal abuse and incitement to hatred
What is hate crime?
Essex Police said:
In most crimes it is something the victim has in their possession or control that motivates the offender to commit the crime. With hate crime it is ‘who’ the victim is, or ‘what’ the victim appears to be that motivates the offender to commit the crime.
A hate crime is defined as 'Any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a person's race or perceived race; religion or perceived religion; sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation; disability or perceived disability and any crime motivated by hostility or prejudice against a person who is transgender or perceived to be transgender.'
A hate incident is any incident which the victim, or anyone else, thinks is based on someone’s prejudice towards them because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or because they are transgender.
Not all hate incidents will amount to criminal offences, but it is equally important that these are reported and recorded by the police.
Evidence of the hate element is not a requirement. You do not need to personally perceive the incident to be hate related. It would be enough if another person, a witness or even a police officer thought that the incident was hate related.
When you read the definition above I don't think it's a massive leap to think of a situation where someone who's walked into a pub full of golliwog dolls might think it meets the definition.A hate crime is defined as 'Any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a person's race or perceived race; religion or perceived religion; sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation; disability or perceived disability and any crime motivated by hostility or prejudice against a person who is transgender or perceived to be transgender.'

Assuming Essex Police are working to their own guidelines I also think that explains why they don't have the option of ignoring it if someone does complain.
Section 5 Public order act may fit the bill here as a crime rather than incident
A person is guilty of an offence if he—
(a)uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour, or
(b)displays any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting,
(b) could fit the bill in this case

If you can't see how caricaturing black people could constitute a hate crime then you are part of the problem.
