Another ‘post covid - new world!’ thread:

15 minute cities. Part of the C40 cities group. The concept isn’t new its been around since 2005. Founded by Ken Livingstone and now chaired by Sadiq Khan no less!

There seems to have been a rapid escalation in their impementation since covid under the ‘build back better’ slogan…
Based on the concept that everything you need will be available within a 15 minute walk or bike ride. They seem to be popping up across many of our town and cities. Sounds great in principle but in practice….?

Poorly thought out?
Increased costs for tradesmen and deliveries?
Reduction in sales opportunities for shops?
Restricted access for emergency services?

Recently there has been a lot of opposition to these schemes along with opposition to the ULEZ expansion. Brentwood council comes to mind. I get the feeling that these schemes will be enforced with yet more nanny state snooping with anpr cameras and fines for transgressors. Mission creep will undoubtedly ensue…

Who are (pardon the pun) the driving force behind these schemes? Presumably the local council have to sign them off? Or can the locals just fill up some huge garden planters with earth and drag them out into the street and be done with it?

I’ve heard nothing from mine on any suggestion of a scheme, I’d better check up. I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to sneak in a something. They are completely useless at most things, but they did manage to cordon off 1000 acres of open woodland during the pandemic along with sticking up social distancing notices on the lamp posts all over my village, so I'm suspicious. Meanwhile the potholes in the roads are epic and grow rapidly in size daily!

How do we feel about these 15 minute cities? Are we ok with living in an open prison under constant survelliance? Ultimately it could lead to things like … China high rise. Not in my town but ok elsewhere?

I do have some sympathies as I often try to do local shopping for small loads on my bike. But I also like to drive across town now and again and fill up the boot of the car with a big shop from Aldi!

I can’t help but think that some of our councils are filled with closet communists that would happily sacrifice our freedom and privacy for their greater good.

In principal they are a brilliant idea, if the things I need are provided within 15 mins as a carrot without restrictions as a stick.
Why would I want to have to travel further than I need to for everyday things? Life is short enough without deliberately spending longer doing mundane travelling to shops or schools etc. The more time to spend on things I want to spend it on the better.

Maybe worth remembering that you're on the definitive website for people who have made a hobby out of travelling more than they need to.

I didn’t think most people chose driving through a town or city to a shop as their preferred way of expressing that hobby?
I know I rather avoid lots of traffic but if that’s your thing you do you. smile

How is driving as a hobby not covered in my last sentence anyway? Time spent needlessly travelling further for every day stuff reduces the time for it.
