One of Ken Livingstone's flunkies once told me that his ambition was a "car free London".

When I called LBC about this City Hall denied the person I spoke to had ever said it.

It seems the idea is still alive..

It mentions different payments for different types of journey!!
How on earth are they/we going to prove/disprove the reason for a journey??

In 1999 Mr Livingstone declared: "I hate cars. If I ever get any powers again, I'd ban the lot"

Now the other 'man of the people', Khant... is going to finish the job along with various Labour run Councils in London.

As usual a survey that steers people in a certain direction.

They never actually ask the real question which is do you want to pay to use the roads. They dont do this because they know the answer would be no!

Its always very specifically worded.

I had a go at TFGM about this (I was on a steering group for the LEZ) and they clearly knew they were asking very specifically worded questions.

It was only when it got to within 4 weeks of the scheme rolling out (after millions spent) did they listen.

Definitely still alive, I went to a future mobility conference a couple of years ago and they had a senior TFL representative basically saying they wanted to have nice quiet streets without any vehicles on. When pressed she didn't even seem that keen on electric vehicles which eliminate the vast majority of the air quality issues or even autonomous vehicles which would eliminate a lot of the risk to pedestrians. I'm sure she never takes an Uber anywhere.

They basically want to live in the countryside with the convenience of living in a city. Arguably a noble ambition but it's a fantasy. I don't know anyone that drives in London for fun. I hate public transport and even I've conceded defeat and take the train/tube unless absolutely necessary.

There can't be many vehicles left that are on London's roads without a purpose.

15 years ago ish the people of Edinburgh got a direct vote yes no to pedestrianising or banning cars in the city centre.
It was an overwhelming no.
An answer the council was not expecting and punished them for ever since with 20 zones , one ways etc.
