Sanctions biting or no?

S7 grounds its A320neo aircrafts.
Officially it's due to planned maintenance ahead of the summer season, nevertheless...

S7 have been trying to either buy or send back their leased planes and were recently allowed by Russia to do so with a couple of 737 max they simply couldn't use due to sanctions. Could well be a move to convince Russian powers to allow it to offload them?

Place I work (software company) has gone the other way. Stopped all sales to our previous Russian customers (that really hurt our bottom line and sales commissions) and hired 3 of the former staff at one bank who managed to escape before any of the mobilisation.

We need permission from Germany to go over 1000 and they don't want to escalate.

I had a call with various US Government personnel representing a number of departments on Friday on the subject of sanctions. There remains a significant number of areas of trade with Russia that remains untouched by sanctions. In particular the export of goods from Russia. What a company chooses to do is for their conscience, but it is likely not to be illegal or breaking sanctions.

Microchips produced by Dutch companies, despite the sanctions, also reach Russia through intermediaries. - https://twitter.com/NOELreports/status/16193957085...

A more clear example is Titanium. Russia is the largest producer of Ti and Airbus have said 3 months ago that it is soon going to wean itself off Ti which is used extensively within the airline industry.
But the excuse is that this could hurt worldwide industries more than Russia itself.

The thing that is hurting Russia in industry are things machined to tolerances, bearings, blades or specific monopoly manufacturers, like motors or components.
You might get stuff through the black market or via the middle east. But tailor made stuff is a mess, my friend is getting heat because they are not buying a Russian made one who they never did because they were st, they are now worse as this Russian factory has lost its key enginerring staff and are themselves under pressure to make bits for a Truck company for the war instead of their products. But the state only loans them money for Russian investment.

Is it though? A quick Google cites the USGS stating that in 2021 the four largest Ti producers were China (52%), Japan (24%), Russia (16%) and Kazakhstan (7%).

Had to be a “when not if” the Airbus and Boeing planes in Russia can’t fly because of spares. I’d think like aircraft parts won’t be able to come in via the black market…..and you wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the technicians that did service the aircraft were foreign nationals.

It will be the same for luxury cars I am sure…I imagine cars are getting stolen and broken for parts to keep others on the road. I guess over time it will result in cars being stolen overseas for parts like cars here already are.

I believe the sanctions on aircraft parts were dropped because of money safety concerns.

20k post limit.
We tried unlimited but an earlier volume of this thread experienced glitches around 30k posts, so new volume limit at 20k posts (used to be 10k posts).
