I tend to find I can see both sides of most things but this one's got me tbh.

AP deletes ‘the French' tweet and apologises after it is widely mocked

I don't even know what both sides to that are, but AP seem to have them covered.

You’ve just dehumanised us all by using ‘people’.

Agree with you. Bonkers.

It's fine the vice-president of AP corporate communications has cleared it all up.

The reference to ‘the French’ as well as the reference to ‘the college educated’ is an effort to show that labels shouldn’t be used for anyone, whether they are traditionally or stereotypically viewed as positive, negative or neutral.

Wow laugh

If ever there was a proof of the value of staying silent and letting people think you're an idiot versus opening your mouth and removing all doubt.

So we should refer to 'the French' as People with mental illnesses? They won't like that!

I quite like the principle of it as something to think about when writing or speaking. The basic point is to try not to simply say things like "The x do y". eg. The French like cheese. Lots of French people do like cheese but many don't. As I say, I like it as something to think about rather than a hard and fast rule.

Totally, it's barking.

Similarly odd if less potentially offensive events were rumoured to afflict the security services. A memo mistakenly circulated to the wrong group was re-circulated with a covering note explaining that it had been sent to unintended recipients, and asking people to delete their initials and initial the deletion,
