Nazi Youth child abuse enabler dies whilst living rent-free in a palace paid for by poor people.

Oh dear, how sad etc etc.

^^^THIS. Should have been investigated by Interpol. There's a mountain of evidence of how he covered up systematic child abuse during his time in the USA to protect the church, whilst throwing vulnerable children under the bus. An absolute scumbag, and if there is a hell which I doubt, I hope he rots in it.

And the current pope covered up for benedict, so he's no better. The whole organisation is rotten to the core.

Harsh.
Still sad of course. He obviously meant a lot to many people (who could find it in themselves to ignore darker side to that and most other religions).
RIP

I had no idea about this.
Rest in flames I think is appropriate then.

A terrible man supported by fools.

I have read there were additional reasons for his ceasing to be pope. Reasons you’d now expect from the catholic church.

You mean people that think he, and religion in general by the way, meant a lot for them. In reality it's complete and utter bullcrap.

And it's not "ignoring' what those people do, it's not willing or able to see reality either due to (pressure from) (social) structures, education etc.

It's quite telling that isolated groups of people on this planet form their own different beliefs and religions. The common themes however are similar. It's probably what people need, being part of a like minded herd.

I think the fact it hadn't happened in 600 years tells you how extraordinary the shenanigans behind the scenes were.

It's XVI by the way, not XV1.

After all, he was based in Rome.

Benedict/Ratzinger should end up in whatever hell he believes in for covering up child abuse. Whatever evils happened after the first time he knew about it and was in a position to stop it are directly on him.

I say that as someone with a degree of sympathy for the Catholic church at grass-roots level, as I know there are lots of decent people who believe in that and other religions.

Yes, but both posters were alluding to other things going on, having a bearing on the resignation, that is what I meant!

Listening to the tributes, which are notably thin on the ground, istm, they are very carefully focusing on his role as a leading theologian as opposed to any Papal legacy. Probably wise.

Let's stick to the evidence. There's no evidence of that. There's a tonne of evidence that he knowingly moved paedo priests out of their diocese when the scandal broke, to placate the parents of the victims, but moved them across the USA to other locations where they could do the same again. The police were never called because protecting the church was more important than stopping child rapists.

Protecting *whatever*, has always been more important than child rapists, murderers, etc throughout human history.
