This looks pretty bad from the news footage but thats seems to consist of endless footage from Buffallo NY.
The other day some woman BBC presenter said 250million people face death due to the storm.
What are the facts? Is the rest of the USA just wearing an extra layer and playing outside?
Are UK news people as stupid as they continue to appear?

Whilst its bad.... Buffalo always gets a bad deal as it sits right between 2 of the great lakes. Its right next to Canada and might be in NY state by name but its one of the only big cities on the lake as soon as you go further north past Rochester there is nothing other than pretty small towns all the way to Montreal.

I was there in 03/04 and we had 12 ft snow drifts in Cleveland. So its nothing unusual.

There's got to be some transcription/memory error in there. 2/3 of the US/Canadian population is going to die? Nobody would be that dramatic surely

I'm in the midwest, just outside of St. Louis

This "event" had the four elements of disruption:
-Fairly cold (got to -16oC with us)
-Lasted long enough for that cold to "sink in"
-Was moving (so affected the whole country over the course of a week) Hence the "250million threatened"
-Dropped snow (not huge amounts, we got 3 inches or so)

Our heating managed to go on the fritz the day before christmas eve, so had about 24 hours or so of no central heating.

We put on the open fire, and the electric blanket on the bed. We've had much, much worse in terms of disruption when you get multiple snowfalls. North of us, no-one would have batted an eyelid. Michigan, Wisconsin, places like that, are all more than used to cold & snow.

Buffalo NY is an area similar. I'm sure they're more than used to it. I think that due to the time of year, you had many folks travelling, and that led to the obvious huge increase in accidents. Then the weather becomes a killer.

"prepare for the worst, hope for the best"

No one likes a slow news day, especially the news.

It seems a number of deaths have related to road crashes, plus a few heart attacks from shovelling snow.

So we're not quite at "day after tomorrow" levels of people freezing where they stand.

Any sort of weather "extreme" is going to be lapped up by the press though.

Good to hear some views from people over there.

I have family in Michigan and they were going to do some before and during photos on social media but evidently got bored as halfway through the 'storm' they took a trip upstate and went hiking in the woods. I'm pretty sure they are still alive.

Buffalo is indeed bad. maybe 35 people dead and they have banned all driving. Lots of crime and looting. It is not a prosperous city at the best of times. Will take a while to dig it out.

The entire country is generally operating as normal though except for the Southwest Airlines meltdown that has totally screwed up airline travel.
