‘In no way comparable’: Joe Lycett at centre of hypocrisy debate after fan points out he performed in Qatar

Is it comparable, sums involved certainly aren't but does seem a touch hypocritical?

Of course it's totally different.

Beckham is being paid to promote Qatar by the Qatari state, presumably Lycett was paid by a local venue to perform his act in Qatar to entertain an audience.

Those are two very different situations, IMO.

It's not hypocritical to perform in a country whose laws you disagree with.

I can see why it could be seen as a bit hypocritical but performing there and being an Ambassador for the country really are quite different.

How?

Beckham is being paid to promote the country by the qatari government Lycett wasnt.

Its more comparable to the footballers that played in the WC or the tv presenters that went there.

Considering Lycett was on a shared bill as part of a comedy tour, I'd be amazed if he made much more than he donated as part of his wood chipper thing.

Lots of people will do things that may not entirely align with their personal ethics when they have bills to pay. What's David Beckham's excuse?

Lycett used a big publicity stunt to show his "outrage" at the Qatari Government, but has still performed there. what is that, if not hypocritical?

If it really bothered him that much, when asked to perform in Qatar he could have made a big thing about not going there because of how they treat people. Emphasising how much money he would lose in doing so.

I like that statement.

It’s pathetic that people are outraged or even mildly miffed by it. Oh and I include all of those on here who are calling him a hypocrite in that.

Lycett was a relatively unknown comedian in 2015 (hence him not getting much to play) he was paid by a uk promoter not £150million by the qatari government to promote qatar.

He’s used his now bigger platform to raise the issue and give £10k to charity.

It’s funny seeing the Sun trying to be some kind of moral arbiter and the people getting upset at Lycett. Kelvin Mackenzie is having a go at him, Kelvin fking Mackenzie!

It's complete hypocrisy.

Directly or indirectly he was being paid by Qataris to entertain them. Beckham's also being paid to provide a service for them. On a related matter Qatar have purchased 24 Typhoons and 9 Hawks from BAe. I'm sure the UK is also buying tankerloads of gas from Qatar. Why can people not just accept

- Some of Qatar's laws and customs are quite backwards compared to modern-day UK
- We might not like their laws but for reasons of pragmatism we want/need to do business with them, just as we do with umpteen other dictatorships.

Pointing fingers at beckham is hypocritical when we as a nation are happy to do business with Qatar.

The fact that he was paid by a UK promoter is a bit of a red herring IMO. The UK promoter would have been paid by the Qataris.

If Beckham was paid by an Agent (middleman) based in Monaco that wouldn't change the underlying agreement.

It also wouldn’t change the nature of the jobs, was Lycett paid to promote qatar?

People being more outraged about this than the issues being raised says a huge amount about them.

I'd be surprised if anyone complaining about Beckham is a big fan of Britain's status as the middle east's favourite arms dealer.
