Less than half of the population now Christian
Discussion
The bubble had finally burst then... it was one of those passing ‘fads’.
I met a born again Christian, & politely informed her that although I was Christened... don’t try & push your beliefs on to me.
She couldn’t answer my probing questions, & many of her friends were nice, but most had that odd angle to life.
I lived with her for a few years... but in the end it got a bit too much.

It isn't surprising.
Religion is fiction and more and more people have realised it.
Agreed.Religion is fiction and more and more people have realised it.
Slightly alarming response from the Archbishop of York:
'It's not a great surprise that the census shows fewer people in this country identifying as Christian than in the past, but it still throws down a challenge to us not only to trust that God will build his kingdom on Earth but also to play our part in making Christ known.'

Interesting stat from the 2021 census, fewer than half of people in England and Wales describe themselves as Christian for the first time.
Is religion going to effectively disappear here, in time?
Declaring oneself as "non-Christian" does not automatically equate to someone not having religious beliefs. Is religion going to effectively disappear here, in time?

Interesting question really. If somebody asked me in the street if I considered myself to be a Christian, I guess I would need to answer I was Christened into the Church Of England (not my choice ) but am an atheist and try to live my life with "Christian" morals. Am I a Christian or not?
As an aside I remember being asked what religion I was (for a form of some sort) , I said none. They said I'll put CofE then

I was Christened & I used to enjoy RE at school... parents thought that I might sign up.
When my Parents were young in the 1930’s, their Parents would be looked down upon if they all didn’t attend the Sunday Morning service... & a GOOD explanation would be required..
I wouldn’t say my parents were Christian as such... but took their marriage vows & morals very seriously.

I'm currently undergoing chemotherapy for a Lymphoma, on my last round I bumped into a little old lady on her first time so she was a little nervous, I calmed her nerves and explained how things went, she ended up sat next to me in the treatment room. I am used to the procedure now and the nurses are really great and we have a little laugh and a joke. Anyway while all quiet the little old lady spoke up "God will get you through this" I think she was a little taken aback when my reply was quite abrubt "I think its the nurses and the st load of chemicals going through me are going to get me through this fortunatly." "i'm not a believer sorry" I continued.
She explained she wasnt either when younger but turned to god later in life and he guided her through many a bad time.
I bit my tongue for the rest of the treatment, was so tempted to point out that if god was a real influence then why would he put me and you through the st we are going through sat here. Luckily I was distracted by a nurse and finished my treatment and continued with my day.

Don't confuse Christian morals with the cherry picked bits that they tell you are Christian morals that fit in with today's expectations. A read thru the bible will hopefully mean that you don't actually live by Christian morals, because if you do, you aren't a very nice person. hyperblue said:
Wonder what the stats would be for Church attendance in the last 1/5/10 years other than for weddings, funerals, christenings etc.
Suspect a lot of box ticking for a religion as an identity when census comes but probably not much action otherwise.
I have been to five funerals in the last four years... all were conducted by a Celebrant.Suspect a lot of box ticking for a religion as an identity when census comes but probably not much action otherwise.
( A celebration / reflection of their life... but with no Religious connotations)
