Seems like a positive case for having them fitted now!
Warning: Conspiracy theory incomingI wouldn't be so sure...
You're right, this will no doubt suck a few suckers in...but be warned, once they've got you, you're stuck with it.
The next stage is to monitor your carbon footprint. Using too much energy Sir?...how about we lower your score and make you pay.
I have no doubt in future we will all be forced to have them installed. No Smart energy Government overlord surveillance device=No angry pixies in the wall for you.

Because the energy companies never know what we are using with standard meters?I wouldn't be so sure...

They have no idea when you are using it or what for though? Live data a lot more powerful and useful than sending in a reading monthly/quarterly.
Why does that matter? Why would the energy company care if you use more energy on a Thursday than a Tuesday?
If anything, it's a good thing as it allowed supply to better match demand.

I like you Rufus.
No matter what it is, you're always happy to just go along with it, safe in the knowledge it's all for your best interest. You don't think about it...it's all good. The Government have your back.
You must be a very chilled out chap
(no seriously, I sound sarcastic, but I'm being genuine. I do sometimes wish I didn't distrust the Government, business and Pharma so much and could see beyond my perceived end game goals and risks)

The people who think smart meters are some kind of plot to jack up prices based on the data they give on when energy is being used etc:
Do you believe, if companies do this, people with a standard meter will be charged as if they are toward whatever the lower pricing band is, rather than the higher one?

I suspect it may be similar to how Uber charge more at busy times. Just because they can.
Some always have, you know the lower night rate.I know from reading your posts on subjects for a number of years now that the suggestion that any of this stuff could have nefarious motivations is something you'd rather not consider and that the government and huge corporations have only our best interests at heart, but that does seem a very naive viewpoint to me.

if you don't switch then you'll pay the highest rates for all of your usage i would guess. They're hardly likely to incentivise it are they with pushing it so hard?Do you believe, if companies do this, people with a standard meter will be charged as if they are toward whatever the lower pricing band is, rather than the higher one?
No smart meter = doesnlt care about the environment and power usage = pay up essentially. And people will lap it up.

The distinction being, that's a lower rate. Surge pricing would mean a higher rate.
Or you could say the night rate is the normal rate and the day rate is the surge rate. Just depends where you wish to start from. Several years ago E.on abandoned the night rate if you weren't on a smart meter. So people refusing one paid more.Even if they do end up charging more a peak times I would bet it will still catch non smart meter customers, the suppliers will just estimate usage.
