Nope, not ww2 under Nazy Germany, but Oxford. The lefty eco loons have truly taken over the asylum and need to be stopped.

What do you suggest? Are you going to lead the resistance?

It's only a proposal at the moment, and the paywall doesn't allow me to see how it might be implemented. Surely the better option would be a congestion zone?

Or even better, a congestion zone that only applies to NON residents, as I'm sure during the summer weekends a lot of the traffic is tourists.

Would be interesting to see the cost/benefit analysis and how they have figured out it is locals going to other parts of Oxford is the actual problem.

The Beeb approaches the story from a different angle.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-...

But it's still a fairly preposterous proposal, although as the consultation period has ended I've no doubt the results will show a definite support for the scheme. They often do in these types of consultations.

Maybe I’m a ‘lefty loon’, probably ‘woke’ too, but I’d love to see something in my area to reduce congestion.

Can’t see this working though, and if restricts people to their local area, it’ll do nothing to cut down the unnecessary short journeys where walking/cycling is a very viable alternative - eg kids to school, trip to local shops, etc.

No one is being stopped from leaving anywhere. There are a small number of streets that are essentially being made no entry, in order to discourage through city driving. Those people who need to, for example public transport, delivery drivers, blue badge holders, trades, will be exempt and residents will be allowed to go through 100 times a year. Residents are moaning because they want to be able to do whatever they want, when they live in a city, but want to exclude everyone else from driving in the city, even though the city is reliant on people living outside because no one can afford the houses in the city, and the same NIMBYS stop all building in the city, residents only parking and high car parking charges to stop anyone else driving in.

The traffic won't disappear it will just go somewhere else and clog that up. No point in these stupid poorly thought out schemes.

So the other 200 or so days of the year a resident wants to go to work theyd have to pay 70 quid?

I agree with you that the idea of personal freedom is disgusting & should be firmly regulated.

Yet another 'let's make it difficult to get about in order to reduce congestion' approach.

I believe that Canterbury are proposing something similar. They want to divide the town into 5 zones and everyone - residents included - would be stopped from driving between zones.

No, assuming they do not work in the city, they simply have to drive another way.

Do you think it’s clever clipping out all of the context? Or did you only read the one line.

These people are all for “personal freedom” when it’s their freedom, although I don’t class being able to drive on a particular road as being a fundamental right. Do you take the same attitude to driving the wrong way down a motorway or stopping at traffic lights? It’s got nothing to do with “personal freedom”.

It seems madness... article says:

"A car journey, for example, from Old Dover Road to Wincheap Morrisons will not be permitted via the existing ring-road.

Those living in Old Dover Road would either have to walk, cycle or use public transport to reach Morrisons"

There is a thread on this or was. As someone who uses Canterbury daily it's a complete non starter.

They will spend tens of millions to stop the school drop off and pick up traffic, that's the only issue with Canterbury traffic its fine 90% of the time.

I can only assume there is currently some sort of traffic monitoring going on at present as the have closed the Sturry road park and ride and a few car parks around the town.

Sometimes I think death by one-way system is the lesser evil...

And then turn the other half of the street into an active travel super lane.

You are exactly what you perpetually accuse other of being.

What if the particular road was the one you live on?
