Press release: Various Claimants vs. Associated Newspapers Limited

Today a group of people have launched a legal action against Associated Newspapers, publishers of The Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday and the Mail Online.

The group behind this legal offensive are: Baroness Doreen Lawrence of Clarendon OBE; Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex; Sir Elton John and David Furnish; Elizabeth Hurley; and Sadie Frost.

These individuals have become aware of compelling and highly distressing evidence that they have been the victims of abhorrent criminal activity and gross breaches of privacy by Associated Newspapers. Unlawful acts alleged to have taken place include:

1. The hiring of private investigators to secretly place listening devices inside people’s cars and homes
2. The commissioning of individuals to surreptitiously listen into and record people’s live, private telephone calls whilst they were taking place
3. The payment of police officials, with corrupt links to private investigators, for inside, sensitive information
4. The impersonation of individuals to obtain medical information from private hospitals, clinics, and treatment centres by deception
5. The accessing of bank accounts, credit histories and financial transactions through illicit means and manipulation.

It is apparent to these individuals that the alleged crimes listed above represent the tip of the iceberg - and that many other innocent people remain unknowing victims of similar terrible and reprehensible covert acts.

They have now therefore banded together to uncover the truth, and to hold the journalists responsible fully accountable, many of whom still hold senior positions of authority and power today.

These individuals have been the subject of public interest during the course of their careers and personal lives. They are united in their desire to live in a world where the press operates freely, yet responsibly. A press that represents truth, is sourced in fact and can be trusted to operate ethically and in the interests of the British public.

Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, and Sadie Frost are represented by Hamlins LLP.

Baroness Doreen Lawrence of Clarendon OBE, Elizabeth Hurley and Sir Elton John and David Furnish are represented by gunnercooke.

David Sherborne of 5RB is Counsel for all the Claimants instructed by Callum Galbraith of Hamlins LLP and Anjlee Sangani of gunnercooke.

Anyone know what the connection is with Sadie Frost?

The 'tip of the iceberg' is fluff.

A press trawl suggests a recent shortage of cash and a need for more press coverage.

Wonder why this motley crew have taken until now to launch this? Not like most of them would have been worthwhile targets for years.

Probabaly because they've only recently found enough evidence of this invasion of their privacy to put a court case together?

It will be a contractor, of a contractor, of a contractor - enough to say they didn't know what was going on.

As far as I am aware it had been very difficult to take the DM to court over these matters.
The press has settled all previous cases out of court with large cash settlements in return for confidentiality. The trick is to offer so much money the plaintiffs would never get anywhere near that in court. If a plaintiff was to pursue the matter win but be awarded less than the DM offered they would be liable for the DM's legal costs as well as their own. As such the full details of the case never come to light.
Harry, Elton, Sadie et all ain't in this for the money. In all probability they will end up out of pocket. The motive for this case is to use their collective deep pockets to give the paper a hard noserub in dogst in court.

It's not those individuals that we should care about, it's the alleged actions of the press.

I hope they win. The media are a cancer on society.

When they defend themselves with 'Oh, but no-one would have known about (for example Jimmy Saville, etc.) without our investigations' it implies they did it out of the goodness of their hearts and for justice when, in reality, they'd do anything to sell more newspapers/web time/get more viewers. They don't give a fk about anyone or anything, totally out of control.

I hope this lot bring the whole group down.

Not in a position to say whether it's correct. I'd certainly question whether it is morally correct, but I can understand the logic behind such an argument.
