What a shame, hopefully workers can find other jobs or maybe commute to other airports.

The trouble with Doncaster is that many other airports and airlines actually looking for people are likely too far to make it viable for employees.

I wonder how much of an influence the value of the land as a new build estate had on the decision?

The land is worth far more now than it was before the new link road was built and will be worth even more once the train station goes in.

Leveling up my fking arse.

Peel Group are a bunch of money grabbing s and have previous for this sort of stuff, hopefully it's not the end for this great airport.

Quite but it’s a business and upto the owners if they want to sell it off or not, even if it’s a viable airport.

Perhaps there’s an argument for retaining some travel infrastructure but it’s not like it’s a crucial part of the transport network or there’s not other airports, albeit further away.

It is a big employer locally though both directly at the airport and through associated jobs in support infrastructure.

Then you end up with political football basket cases like Prestwick remaining open.
For the avoidance of doubt, I don’t want Prestwick to close in its entirety, but closing & demolishing the huge empty terminal, using the station/car parks for a park & ride and making the field freight only would at least reduce the amount of taxpayers cash being thrown down the pan. If Ryanair still want to run passenger flights rather than running everything empty to their hanger then they can pay the terminal costs. They already ferry plenty of empty aircraft in as it is.

Can't say I've ever used it, never seems to go anywhere I need to go, I suspect that was the problem for a lot of people, it was very limited to mainly just cheap holiday flights.

This stinks of Peel wanting the airport land to make quick money on rather than using it as a logistical asset for the area. They've tried it before.

If you run a business aren't you duty bound to do the best for the business? They do exist to make money after all.

(I don't know the finer points of this particular scenario. I can believe that demand has reduced sufficiently to render the airport unviable though)

+1

Leeds-Bradford and Manchester airports aren't so far away and both are bigger.

This looks like straightforward post-COVID economics to me.

It’s a shame. I remember when it was RAF Finningley. I went to an air show there once.

Fairly obvious really, even if no-one had noticed their other local project or their history.

Liz Truss promised it would stay open in her first prime ministers question time.

The way things are going I cannot see her lasting the year.

Not much she can do if they want to build warehouses on it and their 'financial crisis' is faked.

It's sad and the mission to save it has been mismanaged by local politicians playing politics (with a helping hand from our local mp).

Peel was fairly clear that they wanted to see a permanent and viable future. To my mind, they have managed the airport in such a way that the only way they could do this is with a new operator. Our regional mayor took 8 weeks to decide to go to the market to look for an investor, leaving 4 weeks to find them, due diligence etc. The end result is no one even put an offer in.

The temporary fix of a 13 month underwriting of losses, gave no details of the plan, syndicate etc. Peel has had a lot of distraction due to the campaigning and I'm sure did not fancy another 13 months of it - especially if it closed after taking public money.

It is a great airport to fly from and it is a real shame. I have used it quite a few times - even finding destinations that I can fly to for work in the past.

It’s nothing to do with covid.

Both are awful to get to from South Yorkshire / Lincolnshire etc.

Peel has been quietly buying land for years and using the airport master plan to get consent on agricultural land. They now have the masterplan approved, and no longer 'need' the airport for the planning argument.

They have always been expensive and I understand have a reputation for being difficult to work with, hence the issues in getting more traction with airlines. I do not believe their 'loss' arguments. Their accounts are somewhat opaque.

Sad to hear this, I’ve always preferred to fly from there, despite leeds Bradford being closer.

Easy to get to, park right outside the doors and stroll in. Job done
