Good to see police and community leaders have this all under control - how does a cricket match provoke such unrest

Not wholly, it may be that religion is a factor, but then religion itself is also is part a consequence of the need to belong to a community, ot a tribe. Same with football, or baseball, or whether you prefer Subaru to Mitsubishi, or you bought a PlayStation or an Xbox or whatever, it seems to just come down to being a part of a group and then defending that group. Whether you believe in one or the other god is mostly down to which community you were born into.
So I think that the religion may just be another symptom of the tribalism, not more so that the sport itself.
Not that different to violence at footie games especially where there are long running ethnic/sectarian/religious fault lines.
This is nothing new regarding India-Pakistan cricket games, one side wins, some euphoric very visible celebrations likely with some racist chanting thrown in for good measure, losing side fans don't like it so resort to violence and destruction and so the tit for tat continues. It rarely gets this bad, either way police need to take a firm line to stamp it out. Not easy due to the numbers involved.

I'd assumed as the article suggests it's inflamed already existing tensions.Not into Cricket but I remember channel hopping some years ago and doing a double take as there was Cricket on and smoke flares all sorts going on in the stands and it turned out that was India v Pakistan.
Either way 27 arrests seems significant.
